Question on sighting -

Post by rickier65 »

Perhaps I've misunderstood the sighting rules. I"m using 1.01e, and playing the Mcensk campaign - first battle. Im around turn 14-15.

I'v attached an screenshot to hlep show what I'm describing.

I've selected one of my Infantry units. He can see a quesion mark above foxholes, so I'm targeting the foxholes with area fire. But as you can see, I can still see soldiers in foxholes under the question mark - can't target them with unit, but I can see them. Also, note further back I can see more soldiers in foxholes, even though I see no icon for units above them (I do have the icons toggled so they're visible (hence the ? showing).

This has hpappened a few time in this game. I didn't think you could see unit icons if they werent spotted and didn't have the "coin" showing (assuming youre toggled to show that).

Maybe I'm misreading how this sighting works?

Thanks
Rick

After looking at uploaded image I see you can't tell, but the 3 arrows toward the top are pointing at soldier icons, not foxhole icons.

The question marks should show up whether or not you have icons enabled. You should probably double check your icon settings to be sure.

With that said, we did make a small change in foxhole sighting - it's possible this created a bug with spotting infantry in foxholes. I'll double check.

Sometimes during a turn, a unit will at first not be entirely identified, which means it shows a question mark - but then be spotted and identified, which allows the unit to show up (but does not clear the question mark). The question mark should clear at the end of the phase as long as the unit is still spotted.

Here is the save file. I"ll double check and also finish the phase and see what happens. I've played through several battles (set and random and campaign) but in this battle the sighting just seems to be working slightly different. But maybe my imagination. I'll try to be systematic as I go through the turns.

(I may also fire up my laptop, I dont think I've upgraded it to 1.01e yet.).

HHmmm -- cant post zip file here. I'll try in support section.

Thanks for quick answer.

There are rare cases of infantry being sighted somewhere during a phase then being suppressed by fire so that they either drop down or stop firing.   That makes their total sighting factors go down and then they disappear.  I've had occasion where the target infantry were slightly below a rise.  If they stood and fired over the rise they were seen.  When I targeted them they laid down and my units lost sight.  It was like playing wack-o-mole.

That might be, but the screen shot I'm showing is taken during the Orders phase. Not during a execution phase. Also, i posted in support forum another occurance after updating to 1.01f. And I found that if I save the game at that point and then reload, the soldiers aren't visible.

It's not a big deal, but it does give me info that I probably shouldn't have, it's kind of hard to pretend I don't know they're there now.

I'm pretty sure this is some kind of unintended consequence of the change to foxhole sighting. If so we'll have this fixed up early next week for the official release.

I've had visible infantry that I targeted and the rubber band 'stuck' to say that it was targeting the foxhole recently, too.
