10th Anniversary - on the www

Ten years ago for Mother's Day my son installed AOL on our 486 @ 33 on turbo with 2 ram sticks of 1mb each. He was given a 14400 modem by a friend that had just bought a 28800 modem. I later traded the 2x1 sticks for 4x4 sticks, woo hoo 32mb.

Through the internet, I found a employment service that found me the job that moved me to Arizona in 1999. By 2001 we had a PII 200 with 64 ram and 512 cablemodem. I started playing PC wargames and found Matrixgames through PC Gamer's article about a free wargame, SPWAW.

I've seen a lot of people come and go, changes to Matrix, new games and technology.

I wish everyone well and look forward to the next ten years.

Your all young'ins. I remember the C-64 and 1200 or 2400 baud, probably 1983-84.

If you want to go back that far, in 1979 my business system connected on a dedicated phone line to a mainframe at 300 baud. Later systems went to 1200 then 9600. Boy was that fast.

Sorry, sulla... Couldn't resist. I seem to recall going on line for the first time back in 1995, but I didn't get my own Internet connection until three years ago.

I hosted my first bulletin board system back in 1985. It started out at 300 baud, but I was able to upgrade to 1200 fairly quickly. It was an online game (just 1 player at a time)... you could explore through dungeons and traing your character. You could also challenge other players to simulated combat -- and take stuff from them if you won. I charged $10 / month, and I made a lot of money for a teenager!
 
My closest friend at the time made his own games -- and he went on to build the Halo franchise. He did a lot better than I did as a teenager [:D]

Actually Terminus right after that was the real heyday of wargaming. before the " real www " most places like AOL kept files on their own servers. There were huge amounts of addons and scenarios and other things to download. SSI, SSG, SimCanada,Micropose,LucasArts, the list goes on and on. We are just getting to the volume of wargames and scenarios etc. that were available then. Sure they look like crap now,  but then we didn't know the difference.
