Bought Kharkov and OWS

Post by RyanCrierie »

And I'm playing around with them. Question; is there a way to manually modify the "hotkeys" within the game to your own prefernces? I'd like to use as many CM-style hotkeys as possible (muscle memory from 5 years lol)

PS - you can thank the great State of Maryland and it's bri...er...tax rebate for this

Possibly, I will look into it for you. May need a custom dll however which would be a pain to update after every patch.

That avatar of yours needs to be changed before someone breaks their monitor [:'(]

It would be great though if a future patch made the hotkeys reassignable via a XML file.

Ryan,

Not for this release, sorry, but that's a good suggestion for the future - I've added it to our wish list. I hope that the interface will become more comfortable to you in time, sometimes I think prior CM experience makes the learning curve harder!

To be honest; the original Combat Mission Trilogy set the "Bar" for this entire genre of 3D tactical wargaming; it was that rare game which hit everything out of the park -- and there are some great ideas in it that should be copied/borrowed/stolen widely; like the "tool tips" that were in the unit right click menu.

I've tried adding them to PZK, but it's a bit tricky; since they only appear if you mouse over and hold it over the button.

I'm a bit confused - we do have tooltips in the menus by default and the way tooltips usually work is through mouseover... ?

Sorry for the confusion. What I was referring to was to have the hotkey button for that action (when applicable) shown as text next to the command, like in CM.

It's a great learning tool to help build key association, and to help first timers along with the system; and it certainly is more convient than printing out the hot keys from the manual.

Example from CMBB's menu.

Hey, you just added a feature that I was about to ask for:

"6. The F12 key will now toggle Trees On and Off. A few trees and tree shadows will remain so that the user can easily tell where the trees were."

Overall, I would say that there are many rough spots; and areas where things could be improved; but it's a good solid game; that's fun to play.....unlike CM Shock Force.

Calculating Turns and then playing them back -- a great idea that CM SF dropped; forcing you to sit through 60 seconds of nothing; making long road marches a pain, in CMSF.

Some suggestions to improve the playback:

Game Speed for playback Icon - Find some way of showing if it's at 0.1x, 0.5x. 1x, 1.5x, 2x, or 3x speed at a glance; perhaps a filled in clock icon?

Image

Like top to bottom:

0.1
0.5
1
1.5
2
3
4? (Future expansion of time compression?)
5? (Future expansion of time compression?)

And introduce more playback controls; rather than "play/pause" and "Rewind to beginning". A fast forward or fast rewind button that advanced/decreased time in 10 second segments would be nice.

+1!
I find the movie controls a bit lacking, too... I really like the way it was done in CM. Those rewind/forward and fast rewind/fast forward buttons allows moving through the movie much more flexibly IMO. Of course I understand you may not want to "copy straight from CM" but then again, Ryan summarized it all: "there are some great ideas in it that should be copied/borrowed/stolen widely"! [;)]

Agreed... I would actually enjoy having more hotkeys, at least one for each main order. It would be nice if, when hitting a key, the sub-menu would show up for the chosen order. It would also be great to combine hotkeys for main orders and hotkeys for sub-orders. This would allow keeping the same key assignment (e.g. M for move, F for Face) for different base orders (e.g. defend and engage).

Again, fully agreed... I find this to be a solid and enjoyable game, but I definitely see room for improvements. For me CM still sets the bars, but I hope PC can be developed up to a point where it will surpass it! [Note: not speaking of CM:SF here... although I recently tested the training mission in the latest demo and happened to enjoy it, so perhaps there is some hope for me there![8|]]
I'll post more detailed impressions after playing the game some more (all those years of playing CM are indeed not easily gone and require some time to adjust and appreciate PC's approach!)

I have to say something; what really makes Panzer Command is it's retention of the right command menu; each time I try to play Combat Mission Shock Force; I'm always automatically right clicking on my units and cursing when that de-selects them, and then I remember that I have to use the space bar to bring up the menu....[8|]

You mean they have done away with the right click menu?

They have clearly sunk to a new low.

Truly, the menu systemin CMSF is a shocking step backwards in my view. The "hotkey" assignments don't make much sense either...is it the letter i for quick,? and things like that. Also, pressing a key doesn't necessarily always take you back to the appropriate menu option.

It is a great game though. I wish for more than US/Syrian...but overall, I like it alot.

As for PC:K, it took me quite some time to get out of CM mode and into PC:K mode...but now I'm there I enjoy firing it up. I understand the hierarchy or the commands and the roles of the HQ units and now I know those, I can play properly.

Yeah I know what you mean, but remember the time before the spacebar was an option for selecting orders, now that was awfull.

Good idea except I think everyone has gone way overboard with all the little icons, etc. What would be so bad about the NUMBER showing up in a window instead of the clock looking thing? Sorry I'm getting grumpy and losing patience in my old age.

Hi JD,

I cant believe they messed up a tried and tested system.

I also can't believe you like that game, I tried the demo and it just made me sick.

CMSF is alright,The real time feature with turn based feature, and being able choose 2 styles of play is a great idea, but the realtime feature has serious problems especially with a ATI graphics card.

I had PzCommand first,so when I got CMSF,I was like ''this looks like Panzer Command:Modern Warfare''(A suggestion for the next Panzer Command title catch my drift erik.[;)])
