Paint.Net New Version

Post by junk2drive »

I decided to install Paint.Net again and try modding png files. There is a new version dated May 01 2008, 3.31

I followed the links to MS .net 2.0 downloaded and installed, went to Windows update and installed a security update to .net 2.0 (I had just installed XP SP3 last week so don't assume...). I then installed Paint.Net

Played around with a bmp from another game that used pink as the transparent colour. I couldn't figure out the alpha channel stuff, but a click on the Help button took me to their forum where I found a thread that helped me.

Paint.Net is freeware and donations are accepted.

Paint.net is the program I use for most of the stuff I do, although I have used GIMP as well.

Paint.Net Alpha channel

Post by Mobius »

I don't know if Paint.net works like PSP but the basics for PSP would be this.

1) Set your png file to have an alpha channel or use one with one already in it.
2) Save the alpha channel to disk. This saves it to a msk file in PSP. (You have to load from alpha channel then save to disk.)
3) Open the msk file.
4) Edit it so that the transparent areas are black.
4) Save and close msk file.
5) Open your original png file.
6) load a mask from disk. This would be your msk file.
7) Save this mask to the alpha channel of your png file.
8) Save and Close the png file.
9) Convert png to dds file using dds converter 2.

The game uses some png in the UI and HUD. I haven't got around to dds yet.

What I did was open the bmp, save as png, open the png, click the magic wand, set some thingy to 25%, click the pink area, click cut from the dropdown, save again. (A little bit more than that after but you get the idea.)
