Lurker awakens

Post by WarHunter »

Greetings,

I've been lurking here for sometime, but its time to break the silence. :)

Its been great to see the outpouring of help from all corners of the WiF community come together and help bring this project closer to release each day.

Especially i'd like to thank Shannon V. OKeets, for his outstanding attention to detail, openness and frequent posts to communicate how the overall progess is going forward.

I do have 1 major question concerning the game. Its very near and dear to me. Having played for over 10years i need to know how the AI is being worked on when it comes to the Land CRT.

Will it be 1D10 with the option of being played as 2D10?
or
Will it be 2D10 with the option of being played as 1D10?

I'm thinking the former is correct as an answer.

But...

Depending on the choice, the game will play very differently both from an Offensive and Defensive point of view. This even bleeds over to choices of builds and use of Air Power.

I have looked the forums over and found no real discussion about this element of the game.

If i just overlooked it, i'm sorry to bring it up. Just point me to a link so i may post my views in the correct thread.

Thanks for your time. I hope to bring forth some meaningful banter and maybe even help some with "writeups". :)

Welcome.

Whether to use the 2D10 is an option the player selects when he sets up the game. The AI Opponent will plan accordingly.

I have answered this before but it bears repeating - the AIO will calculate expected outcomes using whatever CRT is being used. This is no different than adjusting for many other optional rules (e.g., tank busters, armored divisions, combat engineers, ...). Expected outcomes then drive the decision making. This also applies to such things as whether a tactical bomber should be used for a ground strike or ground support.

Thanks very much for the quick reply :)

The only reason i felt the impluse to ask this question, is that in many face to face games where a player was unfamilar with the 2d10, it would go badly and the learning curve is unforgiving against a veteran player.
Barbarossa being the worse place to learn defense, new to "option43" 2D10.

I can see where the AI is not completly handicapped nor is its learning curve as steep.

Keep up the great work!

In addition to such tactical aspects, I think it will also affect a number of things on a broader scale. I haven't played with 1D10 for a long time, but iirc the 2D10 hugely favors ARM/MECH because of the blitz-bonuses, meaning that the offensive side has greater chance to break the enemy lines, while the 1D10 more often means battles with less bonuses to the attacker, thus flipping his units more often and halting the offensives.

Especially during Barbarossa is the choice of CRT important - with the 2D10 Germany (and later USSR) should build ARM/MECH as top priority, while this is less important with 1D10 (instead more cheaper corps might be more important here(?)).

Other players, who have played with the 1D10 CRT more recently probably have corrections/additional comments, though.

It would be great to hear more from folks who have played with the 2D10. Some of that have had kids have been away from the game for a while so some viewpoints on this would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think very many people who try it ever go back to 1d10

Brian is correct. 2d10 is used exclusivily at the WiFCON.

Will players who enjoy the game using the 1D10 CRT in a multiplayer setting see a smaller pool of players?

Personally i'm partial to the 1D10 CRT, even after learning the 2D10.

The game was designed under the use of 1D6, evolved to 1D10 and came out with a 2D10 option.
It became an option to allow players a way to break out of the trenches that the 1D10 crt had become for some.

With all the additions to the game i feel the 1D10 was "fixed" to become the standard way of playing the game. Under a Wifcon setting, time is a constrait that the 2D10 helped address.

I do not feel it is an option that should be played to the exclusion of the 1D10.

Give me the 1D10 anytime, anyplace, anywhere. 2D10 is an option and if given the choice, i would choose not to play it.

I am curious who out there is a 1D10 or 2D10 player.

Regardless for the arguement for the balancing of the rules, moving from 1d6 was a great move to 1d10.  When they came out with 2d10 I knew it wasn't perfect and open to manipulation, it offered far more variable results, which agree with the actual way battles play out.  I now prefer 2d10.  The bell curve is more interesting than a flat line.

Don't forget that the Arm bonuses also exist with 1D10 CRT.

CRT = combat results table.

The various #D# means number of dice with that given number of sides (polyhedral dice). So 1D6 means rolling one six-sided (i.e. typical) die to get your combat results. 2D10 means rolling two ten-sided dice.

The convention actually comes, if I recall correctly, from Dungeons & Dragons a long time ago.

1d4
1d6
1d8
1d10
1d12
1d20
1d30? (i don't know why i am remembering this one....)

Where the first number is the number of dice thrown and the second number is the number of sides on the die

Bah! You forgot the all important one, used in Cthulhu roll-playing. The 1d100. You get this result best from throwing two 10-sided die, making one be the 10s and one be the 1s. This a throw of a 6 and a 3 would be 63. [;)]

They come from D&D, which is now even named the "d20 system" due to the preponderance of d20 use in Dungeons and Dragons (d20 are used for most rolls, to hit, saving throw, etc).

So I am assuming that WiF had the option of using either 1d10 or 2d10 to roll results on the SAME CRT table?? That would mean that the 2d20 style would have tons more successes and be far more bloody and harder on the defender, right? Or have I misunderstood this?

As per Steve's posts, thankfully the 1d10 & 2d10 combat results tables are separate tables.

Incidentally, it won't be making it into MWiF product 1, but ADG has recently released a 3d10 combat results table in their 2008 Annual. It looks quite interesting and adds more decision-making to the battle process, but until I play with it I can't really say much about it other than that.

Many years ago, one of my friends bought a dice that actually had 100 sides - it was almost ball-shaped, with no interior mass - 'empty inside' - don't recall the english word for it [:)] ) except for some small pebbles to slow it down when thrown. However, it still did roll for quite some time and was not very suitable for playing, so he ended up uding just two D10 instead [:)]
