Ambush in the Coral Sea: Spence(J) vs SASO(A)

Post by spence »

IRL the USS Hornet and USS Enterprise were dispatched to the Coral Sea area when intelligence indicated something was going to happen there after the Doolittle Operation. They arrived too late to take part in the battle. But how would the operation have gone down had they gotten there in time? (Unknown to the Japanese). This Mod postulates that Shokaku suffers a breakdown of it's No 1 Lube Oil Pump which results in a failure of the lubrication to its No 2 Ships Service Generator. Unfortunately replacement bearings are not available at Truk and take 10 days to ship to Truk (by air) and install. Operation MO (against Port Moresby) is delayed accordingly but then proceeds as ordered.

Meanwhile unanticipated but unknown Allied Forces have time to arrive in the theater.

The Coral Sea Scenario is modified as follows:

Allied Reinforcements: Enterprise, Hornet, 4-5 CA/CLs and 10/12 DDs are set to arrive at D+7 but Allied Reinforcements are set to +/- 60. This can result in substantial or not so substantial Allied OOB augmentation.
The Victory Point levels are reset such that the status quo results in an Allied Victory (the levels are experimental so in this case they may not work out but the intent is to make the Japanese try to accomplish Operation MO...occupying a few thatched huts at Lunga and Gili Gili will count for nothing.

Basically other than this is just the Coral Sea Scenario: I'm the Japanese.

Turn one: took a bunch of replacements to CV air groups. Shoho is going to sail with only 12 A6M and 6 B5s though. Meanwhile changed the destination of the big invasion fleet to PM. 21st Mixed Bde is due on turn 3. Looks like enough 14 kt APs to get a good chunk of it to PM before the end of the game. Minor invasions at Tulagi, Lunga, Gili Gili still to happen.

Turn 2

An ineffectual attack on the invasion fleet is made by A-20s from Port Moresby. Following the attack 2 cruisers with elements of the 5th Kure NLF sprint forward to Gili Gili to occupy that place.

Small landings made on both Tulagi and Guadalcanal. There is no opposition and the bases should be overrun next turn.

A couple of enemy submarines are spotted.

Cardiv 5 is sailing SE from Truk conserving fuel. A replenishment group follows. Meanwhile the Aobas head for Rabaul to support the ground effort against Port Moresby.

3 more turns gone by with the Allied land based air getting a bit of experience against IJN transports...I apparently had a bit of a misconception necessitating a change in plans: 21 Mixed Brigade is not showing up on turn 3 but rather turn 13...it can not possibly get to Port Moresby and without it I consider the likelihood of overcoming the garrison with just the South Seas Force and such odds and ends as are immediately available as nil. So now how to win?

In the last 3 turns I have killed a bunch of Allied fighters but most of the bombers are getting through. My LBA losses have been light but of course even that is significant.

Grabbing a few minor bases has gotten the score closer but no way to win that way.

Going to have to seek a CV battle and win it. The odds are roughly even if only the Yorktown and Lex are lurking...if Enterprise and/or Hornet are about this could get dicey.

So I split the carriers into 3 forces: Shoho, Nisshin, 2 x CAs, 2 x DDs leads with fighters on 50% CAP, Kates on 50% Naval Search. Shokaku with 2 DDs and Zuikaku with 2 DDs both follow the Shoho force. Fighters are on 50% CAP, one Val Squadron is on 30% Naval Search, the other on 10%, all Kates on pure Naval Attack. The whole force(s) is hooking around the end of the Solomons Chain (apparently undetected 300 miles NNW of G-canal on the 5th of May (all dates remain those of original scenario). 2 of his carriers are about 300 miles WSW of Rennell Island. A seaplane base/tender is located at Rennell as well as Rossell Island further West. So now...into the breach!

RE: Ambush in the Coral Sea: Spence(J) vs SASO(A)

On the 8th of May, my two big carriers refuel at Shortlands. Such aircraft replacements as are available are taken. The carriers then sail for points South.

Meanwhile the Allied bombers at Port Moresby and Japanese bombers at Rabaul make life miserable for the other sides' shipping. Resupply of Lae gets expensive as does trying to augment the landing at Buna with some engineers and supplies. The USS Nashville and HMAS Hobart get hit with torpedos near Gili Gili.

On the 9th one of my cruiser TFs moves in to Deboyne Island to clean out an Allied seaplane tender. A small Allied TF reacts to its rescue. After losing a destroyer the enemy withdraws but the seaplane tender has gotten away.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Deboyne Island at 58,96

Japanese Ships
CA Aoba
CA Kinugasa
CA Furutaka
CA Kako, Shell hits 5
CL Tenryu, Shell hits 1
CL Tatsuta, Shell hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
CA Chicago, Shell hits 5, on fire
DD Walke, Shell hits 1
DD Farragut, Shell hits 5, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk

The previous turn has left a bunch of blazing wrecks at Lae and Buna...the Allies are allowed to finish them off while such supplies as are still carried are unloaded.

An Allied sub finds CVL Shoho limping back to port (actually it is a forgone conclusion she's done for with 88 sys, 87 flt and 55 fires) and sinks her with a pair of torpedos.

Further South USS Hornet rolls over and sinks without any extra help.

In the carrier battle just past I put Shoho in a TF with Nisshin, Myoko and Haguro (and some DDs) hoping that the relatively high durability/victory point value of that TF would draw the Allied Players airstrikes to it. Shokaku and Zuikaku were both put in seperate TFs with just a pair of DDs each as escorts. It seems that the Shoho did as ordered: 4 out of 5 of the American CVs' morning airstrikes went after Shoho rather than my big CVs. Thus although Shoho got smeared my big boys remained intact and my counterstrike took out Hornet and damaged the other CVs.
