Interested in Starshatter. Have some questions though.

Starshatter: The Gathering Storm extends the classic space sim by combining fighter and starship combat in a single dynamic campaign game.

Hey all. I'm really interested in this game but I don't know if I just want to go ahead and buy it. So I'm just going to shoot some questions first and see what you folks say.

First thing, I really like space combat sims and was willing to spend time playing X2/X3 series games. Unfortunately, I really hate the amount of time they require because most of it consists of really boring tasks of mining/doing bbs crap. I wouldn't mind if the money was actually better than minimum wage but eh. So instead I found this game which has the combat I was looking for.

Unfortunately, this game really looks like ass and sounds like ass (or at least the engines do). So I was wondering, are there any graphic mods available? Some fancy planet textures? As for the sound, are all the files readily available to be overwritten?

Thats really the only thing I'm concerned about. Just the graphics and the sound. If it can be easily fixed, then please tell me. Thanks.

Almost everything in Starshatter is modable. [;)]

Why do you desire more fancy planet textures? Starshatter is primarily a simulated tactical space fleet battle simulation?

You are obviously more interesting in the look of a game than the tactical simulation presented. That's fine, but don't miss the challenge the simulation presents in the process.

Bear in mind that if you're going by the vastly-outdated demo on the www.starshatter.com site, that's not how the current Starshatter 5.0 looks. The music is now from a professional house and there are neat additions like specular maps (i.e., ships are shiny) and stuff like that. The mail messages that you get are also rendered as cutscenes, whereas in the demo they are in text only.*

Starshatter 5.0 has some problems of its own, however, and the game author barely supports/doesn't support the software.

* Personally, I think Milo should've stuck with the text-only mail messages; the cutscenes for important news announcements are one thing, but Sarah sounds very Valley Girl...
