Playing as the South...the Union lands units on the coast in swamp regions from time to time...it seems near immpossible to be able to move into those areas (even when activated) to attack the invaders....what am I doing wrong?

Thanks

It's also almost impossible for the Union to leave these areas as well.
game manual p. 95- Units not moving across a road or rail side will spend the cost for the area they are leaving or entering, whichever cost is higher.

You may want to consider just ignoring them unless, of course, you see an Army Commander show up! [X(]

In any case, it's hard to have a high enough initiative to enter: swamp 4, if winter +1, hostile +1, etc....

You mean with "initiative" (red arrow). Activation is something different in the game.
It seems you need more movement points. Choose a leader with a high skill in what you want to move in with (infantry, artillery...). Try with an infantry leader with an infantry skill of 4 maybe. If you get initiative you should be able to enter the enemy infested swamps. [:D]

Swamp areas are usually only two political points, it's not worth the cost better attack or defense somewhere else. The Union takes them because it's easy and probably don't have a better place to attack.
Anyway better than wasting a four rated leader try using cavalry and a 3 rated cavalry leader, then again you won't be able to do anything until he gets initiative.
Better forget those marshy areas, let the North have Florida for their wounded [:D]

Well the problem is you have to guard those bridgeheads and so leave more troops in the south. I usually attack those regions there before he brings in more troops, breaks through my siege and attacks the unguarded heart of the CSA. So better kick them out fast and send them back into the sea.

This is a matter of degree, but if the Union has landed in a swamp, no roads, no railroads, then, under ideal conditions, a Unit Commander (no Army Commander) must have a 4 attack rating and gain initiative (very unlikely) just to move out of the region with infantry. It will require 5 movement points, swamp 4, plus enemy region +1.

Seems to me, unless you see (scouting is good [:D] ) depots, and especially an Army Commander showing up, these incursions pose little threat.... YMMV! [:)]
