For those with trouble reading or seeing the map.

From the legendary team at 2 by 3 Games comes a new grand strategy masterpiece: Gary Grigsby’s War Between the States. Taking gamers back to the American Civil War, this innovative grand strategy game allows players to experience the trials and tribulations of the role of commander-in-chief for either side. Historically accurate, detailed and finely balanced for realistic gameplay, War Between the States is also easy to play and does not take months to finish.

For those with trouble reading or seeing the map.

I guess I am getting old, but I will having real trouble reading and seeing the map. Everything just seemed so small to me. Even when I maximized it in windowed mode and zoomed in on the screen I was having trouble.

Then, I went and made if full screen. WOW.

Windowed mode is great, but this game was meant to be played on FULL SCREEN.

Actually, there's another configuration file where if you feel like modding it, you can redefine your three zoom levels to whatever you want. I have to go looking for it again, but I know I saw it earlier.

Of course you can always set your resolution to something close to 1024x768 and get a similar feel in windowed mode as you get in full screen mode. The zoom settings are in the cwart.txt file, although it would take some explaining to say how to adjust the zoom levels (it's similar to WaW/AWD in the way the data file is set up for zoom levels).

This seems to work best for me and I had to go all the way down to 1024 X 768. I like being able to alt-tab back to the manual and forum while learning the game. I hate that res for my desktop though. So what mode and res do you guys generally play?

I play in windowed mode at 1152x864 desktop setting (my eyes aren't good enough to have my desktop set at anything smaller).

In cwart I just edited

// zooms for the game
MAP_ZOOM,2200,3600,4800
//MAP_ZOOM,3200,4000,4800

Seems to work as I can now see all of the map from east to west at 1680x1050 zoomed all the way out and my 2nd zoom level is pulled out some. Does something else need to be changed too or is that it?

I don't recall, you might have to change some of the unit art numbers, or the chip scaling numbers, but if it looks good to you, then you're set.

Yep, that's the one Ted, glad you found it. I play in 1680x1050 windowed and zoomed out, but I'm sure that in another 10 years I'll be zooming in.

I have to admit that I am having some difficulty viewing the map for too long a period of time...everything is just too soft-hued without enough color contrast...can you at the very least have the region names in black?

Something that has helped me is to make an edit to the how the shading of the map is done. Take a look at

fb.asp?m=1835030

The file that needs editing is cwart.txt file in the dat folder. The color stuff is at the bottom.

That should add a bit more color because all the union territory now has a yellowish tint instead of grey.

It's not a serious prob, however the F9 map shows the terrain contours...for example Texas seems to be union controlled sometimes but of course it isn't it's just a lighter shade of grey, so almost white, because of terrain. I guess a slightly darker shade for CSA would just be perfect and easy.
