Which land unit –covered in WiTP was the best?

Post by Hornblower »

Opinions solicited and most welcome on this one.

In your opinion, which land unit –covered in WiTP was the best? I don’t mean Armored, CD, etc – but rather a specific unit. Such as 3/5th Marines, or 2/9th battalion of the AIF, 25th Division USA, 2nd “Sendai” Infantry Division, 2nd Marine Division, Japanese Imperial Guard , etc.. While this question may not result in the same fiery exchanges as “zero vs wildcat” on the UV forum, we can only hope..

It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

IMHO

Best US Division    1st Div  USMC
Best OZ Division    7th Australian Infantry Division
Best British Div      2nd Infantry Division
Best Indian Division 17th Indian Infantry Division (Though I also like 7th Indian Div)

Best japanese Division  18th Infantry Division.

I'll have a think about lower levels

did the 7th AIF actually serve as a Division in the Pacific? I seem to recall reading that the 6th & 7th AIF never fought as an entire Division after 1941.

The luckiest Australian Division was the 9th AIF, held out at Tobruk, did well at El Alamein, and missed out the Kokoda Track, Gona-Buna battles where MacArthur was learning to fight a amphibious war. Missed out on Greece and Crete.

The unluckiest is of course the 8th AIF Division that was almost entirely captured in Singapore, Rabaul and Timor. Even those that survived the war were all maimed in some fashion.

5307th Composite Unit, the famous Merrill's Marauders.  However, I'm not sure it's in the game properly...

Hard to say which LCU was the "best".  I certainly wouldn't have sent a Raider battalion to take Pelieliu, but you don't send the 1st Marine Division to recon a remote outpost either.

Such a difficult question of how to measure best.  I'm going to go with the definition of most accomplished given the resources.  Therefore

IT's a tie between 2nd USMC and 1st Marine Defense Battalion.

Exactly.

What does "best" mean?

Did the most with the least?

Inflicted the most casualties?

Suffered the lowest loss rate per day in combat?

Had the coolest equipment?

Had the best training?

etc.

Exactly.

What does "best" mean?

Getting the most pay without seeing much action? [:D]
Yamato, IMO the best looking Battleship.

I would take it as a mix of the above (except training), that its performance over time in more than 1 combat was better than others. I listed a number because different Armies had different combat circumstances.

How do you differentiate 17 Indian Div which was basically in the front line from Dec 41 to Aug 45. It survived retreats and sieges and was a key player in the push to Rangoon, from 1st Div USMC which had much shorter days in combat but were usually the spearpoint of an amphibious assault but had substantial periods of leave in civilized arears.
