ASW devices and aircraft: report

Post by el cid again »

In RHSEBO Test 10A vs Panzerjaeger

an air strike reported dropping - among other bombs - "Pattern 2xSmall DC"

Which tells us two things:

1) The name string is not too long to report

2) Aircraft do not ignore ASW devices - but both carry them and drop them.

Unfortunately, the target was a destroyer. The report at the end of the attack reported the DC hit
as a bomb hit. Unlike bombs and torpedoes, DC do not report as separate items.

The implications are several:

a) We may see ASW device listings in ship ASW attacks if the die roll is going to initiate a hit string;

b) Large aircraft with composite bomb and ASW device loads are likely to work vs all target types;'

c) It may be the code has no sense at all that ASW weapons are needed vs submarines, and so they
will - used on aircraft - be more less bombs with no armor penetration value.

I continue to suspect that aircraft actually only engage submarines which are not submerged.

I do not yet know if the ASW air mission causes code to use a default loadout - or not?
Torpedo bombers attacking ships will always load 1 torpedo of the type assigned in the default load for the aircraft.
ASW might be like that.
Recon missions will "bomb" targets occasionally - even if the type has NO bombs at all in the default load for the aircraft-
in which case the bomb is probably a particular slot (e.g.100 pound bomb or 250 pound bomb for the Allies).
ASW might be like that too.
It is not clear how many DC might be dropped either - but a reasonable guess might be two.
