Hi. I am loving the game but I have a problem with the larger modules. The game completely locks up during the AI turn. I know one solution is to play smaller scenarios but i think that I should be able to play the larger ones given that i have a pretty new machine.

I have an AMD dual core 4000+ 2.1 ghz, 2 gig of ram, chunky vid card, the whole shebang. Are there some settings I am missing or is my estimation of my machine overboard?

Really depends on which scenario you're trying to play and how long you wait for a "hang" to clear.

WaW with the AI playing the Allies, it can take the AI 15 - 20 MINUTES to complete it's turn, so you have to be really patient to see if you actually have a "hang".

Most of the larger scenarios are really only for PvP.

I waited 40 minutes and the game was frozen. WaW scenario is unplayable for me

Scenarios as Russia1941, Ardennes and Africa should run fine against the AI.
 
WaW is indeed a step to far. it seems. It is on my future patch list to speed up the AI a bit in those biggy scenarios as WaW and GPW (especially that last one).
 
Always make sure though you got the latest version.
