Air range short change

Can anyone explain why the game shortchanges the Americans on their already miniscule air range?

Why does the game refuse to allow me to fly the American planes to a distance stated as their extended range?

Wildcats have a listed regular range of 6 hexes and a listed extended range of 8 hexes.

When I choose a target location 8 hexes away that is clearly depicted as within the extended range circle I get a response that the range is too far and the selected target location is not accepted.

What gives?

Two possibilities:

1.  From what I have heard, the range circles are guidelines only and often inaccurate.  You really need to count hexes to make sure it is in range.

2.  What mission are you trying to assign to the Wildcats?  Some mission types might not possible at extended range.

Check the rulebook for what missions can be flown at extended range and you´ll find your answer.
