When make a piloting skill check?

How are the chances of you having to make a piloting skill check calculated?

It's so strange when sometimes I have to make a skill check after being hit by a AC4, while I just got hit by a tesla and a AC20 in a row with no skill checks needed whatsoever...

The reason I'm asking is that one time, while I knew for sure my enemy had major problems in staying up (=had to roll for every movement), I couldn't make him do the skill check eventhough I hit him with two consecutive BRG hits. Since you can't fail a skill check you don't have to roll, my enemy stood up another 20 seconds, killing my elite pilot with his Chainsaw.. Tough luck, but I'd like to know how tough, indeed!

BTW, I hereby join the "I've remained stood up after they shot my leg to smithereens" -club. It was my support, and I still stood some 60+ seconds later, having sanded down two other titans in the meanwhile with full firepower. <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

Hey, the RTFM crew is *always* alert to potential targets <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
And yes, I am <img src="wink.gif" border="0"> (joking). I had the help of the Master Creator himself. It is pretty good I think. If only people read it b4 asking... but then the crew would not make much sense right ? <img src="wink.gif" border="0">
