I should know this - different results

Post by borner »

I was asked this by another player, and found I did not know the exact answer, so thought I would look for someone smarter than I am on here.

What is the safeguard built into the system to prevent Japan from getting different combat results from running the turn multiple times? I know it is in there, as early on in playing the game I tried to see if I could make this happen, and was pleased to see the results were always the same. I just do not know how this is built in, but I want to say it's if the US saves and sends his turn from slots 1-20. Is that right?

To be honest, I do not remember anything about a problem with either side saving in slots numbered above 20.

i would like to know how 2 players can prevent different combat reports in this game. it would be nice, when a matrix employee would let us know, if there are things the players can do to get identical CR results.

its realy annoying play a game into the middle of 1943 only to be insulted by my opponent as a cheater (when he mails me was it that important to win? then it is a cheating imputation) and see that he wasted my time for nothing.

its realy strange that some people only post such crap when they are 5200 VP behind and have only few months remaining to catch up. seems for me realy that some poeple simply look for a excuse to end the game without just saying "ok i give it up". its like a japanese player, who can not conquer PM by the end of 1942 and then ends the game suddenly by terming his opponent as a "far right neocon". its simply absurd to waste the time of someone who is willing to play a game against you this way.

so if there is a way to eliminate this "cheap excuse", then let us know it, dear matrix. so one can finaly be sure to have a better chance to end the game instead of wasting his time to someone who gives up very easy when things are not going the way he is expecting in the game.

Someone asked me over from the WITP forum to comment on differing results for the Japanese player - i hope this is the thread that was being asked about.

It IS possible to get a different result - either by the Allied or the Japanese player - commonly this is caused the SYNC bug or REPLAY bug. It is actually several bugs that all result in the same thing: the replay seen by different players don't match.

Since the Japanese player actually generates the next turn, it has been widely assumed in the past that this is the "correct" result, but it isn't true in every case. In this case the "correct" result is the result that can be replicated time and again (by either player).

It IS possible for the Japanese player to induce the bug which has led to all the speculation about cheating... however, i won't go into that: i will go into how to prevent the replay bug.

There is a stickied thread on the WITP forum that goes into this - see:
fb.asp?m=1686565

A short version: if your game has been stable (i.e. - you haven't had problems with multiple turns and you are sure you are running the same version of the game and maps) - then

1) Make sure you always reboot before running a turn result (also know as the replay, movie or the animation). This is the WITP001.pws file.

2) Load WITP immediately after booting and don't load any other big programs - run the turn.

3) Do NOT hit the ESCAPE key as the Japanese player - you can hit exit, but don't hit the escape key.

If you are having problems from the very beginning in your PBEM - you might have differing files - make sure they are the same... and follow the directions in the sticky.

i hope this helps.

It´s actually Uncommon Valor, not WitP, these guys talking about...

Oops! Sorry - yes, you'll have to translate to whatever the UV equivalent is... i haven't had UV loaded on my machine for several years, so i don't know the actual file name is anymore.

i am told that the game engine is essentially the same, so hopefully these procedures will solve the problem as it does in WITP.

allow me to clarify: Quite often the combat replay for the US player, will not match the combat report form Japan that the games goes forward on. This can be quite a problem if, for example, his report says 2 hits, and yours says 3. Japan now has the advantage of knowing the actual results. However, what is the safeguard built in to make sure Japan cannot run the turn multiple times to make sure this cannot happen?

IF you follow the directions as above - you will ALWAYS get the same results, every time, no matter if you are Allied or Japan.

There has been speculation that the Japanese player can just redownload the turn and rerun it to get different results: it won't happen IF THE DIRECTIONS ABOVE ARE FOLLOWED.

A player can get the program to malfunction by various methods - in which case the SYNC/REPLAY error will show up, as one player will have induced changes, but the other player will have the true (replicatable) result.

sorry, but this solution is totaly unpractical.

rebooting the PC before every turn takes some times, and also dont loading programs like antivirus and anti spyware software in background right after starting the system is suicidal in this times.

i would say all player save between 1-20 and simply trust eachother..after all, its only a strategy game and not counterstrike for 30.000 bucks prize-money.

I agree, I am not going to reboot just to run a turn. But, I do exit the game and restart the game inbetween every PBEM game turn.

Call me a dummy, but the thought of doing anything other than running, saving and sending out the next turn is a no go for me.  I leave the game running and do turns as I can, trusting my opponent.  I have never had an issue of being accused of or thinking that anyone I've played has done anything to alter results.
Todd

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

I also leave the system going for long periods. The turns load faster if you leave it going turn to turn. I have never seen this as an issue in any games i have played, and hopefully never will, I  just did not know the answer.
