RHSEBO Test 11D vs Drew

Post by el cid again »

7 Dec 1941

In this test Ro-41 also hit a mine at Manila - and is almost certain to sink from the flooding. Sending a vessel into Manila is apparently a very bad idea.

Allied ships detected - but did not hit - mines at Singapore and Batavia.

I-165 was detected at PM - and subject to "ASW attack" - but since no AS ships are present - it was of course unable to work. I guess that means she was spotted on the surface - or a periscope was seen.

Ro-24 put a torpedo into AMC Kanimbila at Singapore, setting her on fire.

I-14 torpedoed and sank AK Halealakila at Christmas Island. The midget sub device was one of those that worked.

I-9 missed AK Vitorlock with torpedoes, but set her on fire with shellfire, at Rangoon.

The day turn begain with 12 Ki-48s out of Canton causing 5 runway hits at HK. No plane losses.

35 Ki-48s out of Cambodia inflicted 6 airbase hits at Georgetown. 5 Buffalos on CAP damaged one bomber.

97 Ki-21s and 25 Zeros (Yamada DHD) out of Soc Trang Indochina hit Singapore. 8 Buffalos on CAP were not enough
to prevent penetration. 30 aircraft destroyed in the air and on the ground. 14 bomb hits on 8 ships: 3 on fire, 2 with heavy
damage. 92 other hits. 7 Ki-21s lost and 12 damaged.

35 Nells from Takao hit Cagayan. 4 airbase related hits. 21 more came in from Cam Rahn Bay: 1 B-17 destroyed on the
ground, 6 other hits. No CAP. No losses. A total of 3 Nells damaged combined total for both raids.

39 Ki-48s and 18 Ki-21s (escorted by 89 Zeros) hit Manila. 6 bombers lost and 3 damaged - mainly to AA fire. 10 P-40s on CAP.
14 aircraft destroyed in the air or on the ground (13 P-40s and 1 PBY). 1 bomb hit each on 15 different ships: 11 of those on fire.
29 casualties, 1 gun lost, 15 other hits.

48 Bettys (escorted by 45 Zeros) hit Clark. 19 fighters of 4 types on CAP. 3 bombers damaged, none lost. A total of 33 aircraft
were destroyed. 11 casualties, 1 vehicle lost, 99 other hits.

The morning attack on PH included 36 Vals, 69 Kates and 13 Zeros. 1 P-40 on CAP. 88 aircraft destroyed (1 in the air).
19 hits by 800 kg bombs and 10 hits by torpedoes on 10 ships - 7 BB, 1 CA, 2 CL: all on fire, 110 other hits.

19 JAAF bombers of 2 types caused 39 casualties to ROCA 13th Field Army. 39 JAAF bombers of 2 types caused 149 casualties and 5 guns lost to ROCA 68th Field Army. 3 JAAF air strikes on the Hopei Militia Regiment caused 63, 5 and 0 casualties, respectively.

29 Ki-51s caused 5 casualties and 1 vehicle lost at HK. 3 planes damaged.

15 JNAF bombers of 2 types caused 5 casualties and 1 gun lost to the Guam Insular Force.

36 Kates from the CVL force all managed to miss CA Indianapolis and 2 DMS near Johnston Island. 1 plane lost, 3 damaged.
18 more did even worse - 3 planes lost and 10 damaged for no hits - all aiming at charmed Indianapolis. Finally the last
12 went in - put one bomb into DMS Dorsey and missed Indianapolis again - with 3 bombers damaged. All these bomber
units were severely demoralized.

33 Japanese light bombers of 2 types put 18 bombs into PG Peteral and 1 more into PG Wake at Shanghai. Then 16 Bettys came in
from Bako and put 4 more bombs into Peteral - not a large number but these were 250 kg bombs.

KB sent 22 Kates to sink AP Jagersfontein with 14 800 kg bombs and 4 torpedoes at PH. 25 more put 10 800 kg bombs and 5 torpedoes into AO Sapulga. 18 Vals put 11 bombs into AK Minini.

The CVE force sent 3 Kates into Manila - where they missed a PG - but one was lost to AA fire. No CAP. Then 10 more missed 2 AKs at Cebu - again no CAP.

Afternoon air strikes began with 36 JAAF Ki-47 (Kates) hitting HK. 3 were lost, 1 damaged. 1 plane destoyed on the ground.
27 other hits.

The afternoon KB strike on PH bases was by 60 Vals and 49 Kates (unescorted - not that it mattered).
16 carrier bombers destroyed, 13 more damaged. 14 aircraft destroyed on the ground. 15 800 kg bombs hit 10 ships (including
7 BB, 1 DM, 1 DD, 1 AV): all on fire, USS California has heavy damage. 80 airbase hits.

17 Bettys out of Maleolap caused 4 airbase hits on Johnston Island.

20 Nells out of Kwajalein caused 1 airbase hit on Wake Island. 9 F4Fs on CAP. One aircraft damaged on both sides.

Clark is operational: 5 B-17s and 11 fighters tried to hit ships at Legaspi. 10 Me-109s and 1 Pete on CAP. 1 Ki-43 shot down.
CVE Hosho attacked but not hit.

3 Vildebeestes out of HK missed CLAA Tenryu at Aparri - no losses. 3 more repeated this at Taan - but one was damaged by 9 Ki-27s on CAP there.

3 ROCAF SB-2s missed an AK at Swatow.

The CVL force sent 8 Kates at the Indianapolis force near Johnston - and they put 3 torpedoes into DMS Dorsey - already damaged - but failed to engage the cruiser herself. 38 more Kates went in - and put 1 250 kg bomb into the cruiser at last - setting her on fire - and ending her charmed status. Even so - the CVL force is now combat ineffective with thoroughly demoralized bombers. 3 more Kates were lost, 6 damaged.

39 JAAF bombers of 2 types put 3 more bombs into USS Wake at Shanghai. They could not find the Peteral.

KB sank AVD McFarland at PH with 24 Vals and 15 Kates (no surprise there).

26 Bettys out of Saigon attacked Force Z at Singapore. 1 was lost and 9 damaged by 10 Buffalos on CAP and AA fire. 1 bomb hit on Prince of Wales, Repulse was also attacked but not hit.

Four Kates from the heretofor ineffective CVE force managed to put a torpedo into AK Panay at Cebu - aided by total lack of enemy CAP. Then 7 more Kates missed an AK at Manila.

2 Jakes from ships at Brunei missed an AK at Miri.

AP Luzon ran into the only IJN battleship force not in the Central Pacific at Cagayan - and was sunk (of course).

Imperial Manchu Navy's only seagoing warship - DD Hai Wei - put 3 4.7 inch shells into Wake at Shangahi - but
failed to sink her immediately. Wake starts the game with horrible damage - and took more damage from bombs earlier in the day - and she was not able to fire back.

The two 6 inch CD guns at Rabaul managed to fire only 4 shots - but all 4 hit - one on a DD and 3 on an AK - which of course is in trouble.
Later they fired 31 more shots at landing ships - but missed every time.

I-165 was spotted at PM - but not localized. Ro-24 was spotted and attacked by two DD at Singapore - but not hit.

CD batteries on Lahaina fired 208 shots at 15 ships, scoring 15 hits on 11 ships, setting 1 AK on fire.

Landings were unopposed at Tarawa, Johnston I, Legaspi, Kavieng, Kona, Aparri, Guam, Cagayan, Buin, Brunei, Stroeng Trang and Hollandia.

Marines at Wake fired 389 shots at 8 ships, scoring 12 hits on 5 of them, but none were set on fire.

Finally CD units woke up at Brunei and fired 31 shots at later landings - and managed to hit DM Hatsutaka.

Ground assault got 29:1 at Wake, destroyed 6 aircraft, inflicted 1806 casualties and 45 guns lost. Nanyo Detachment lost 45 casualties and 1 gun.

IJA achieved 2:1 at Sinyang, Central China - forcing 3 ROC units to retreat - 377 Japanese to 115 Allied casualties.
IJA achieved 1:1 at HK - reduced fortifications - 228 Japanese to 35 Allied casualties.

Allied bombardment attacks at Rabaul and Brunei were combat ineffective.

IJN ground assaults took Tarawa (unopposed) and Johnston Island (not effectively defended by a small base force).

Tavoy Burma failed to fall to airborne assault. Undefended Ye Burma did fall to airborne assault.

Possible enemy carriers were spotted near French Frigate Shoals. Two carrier divisions with effective air groups were sent North to intercept their retreat to the NW. Akagi and Kaga went to Lahaina to provide fighter cover for the landings until airfields there can be made operational.
