Smaller missile racks outclassing larger ones

Post by Lyhrrus »

Through all my designs, I have found that larger missile racks are somewhat less effective. Although the SRM8s and NM14s are nice to fill in certain slots in some situations, generally I belive they should have a bit more kick to them. I can't reccomend any tweaks as of yet. I'm not going to go through all the math here but so far, here are my findings for ~equal weight/slots. One may argue that larger racks will give greater cluster hits, but I find that tossing more missiles at the opponent is more effective.

In terms of heat and damage per reload, SRMs and NMs increase in effectiveness with greater rack size. However, LRMs decrease in effectiveness, drastically so from LRM6s to LRM9s. If nothing else is fixed, I believe there should be a few tweaks to LRMs.

2 SRM4s outclass 1 SRM8
3 SRM4s outclass 2 SRM8s
2 LRM6s outclass 1 LRM12
3 LRM6s outclass 2 LRM12s
2 LRM6s are slightly under 2 LRM9s
3 LRM6s outclass 2 LRM9s
5 LRM6s outclass 3 LRM9s
2 NM7s outclass 1 NM14
4 NM7s slightly better than 3 NM14s

Go check my homepage at http://www.hut.fi/~jmikkone for a new weapons chart. With little logic, having all LRM rack sizes very close to each others at damage per second ratings, the extra slots lost by choosing LRM9s or LRM12s seem a bit unnecessary.
