The Grand Ottoman-Russian-French alliance attacks poor Kaiser Ulver

Post by ulver »

This game arises from a misunderstanding on my part. I always assumed that British Amph movement was only allowed after Belgian/Netherlands neutrality was violated by the Central Powers or after the Ottoman Empire joined the Central powers.

Hence in my last game against the (EU)banana I declared war on the Ottoman Empire with Germany to – so I thought – prevent the BEF from going anywhere. As I wrote in that AAR I thought that was a nifty what-if build into the game. In a situation where Germany respect Benelux neutrality and the Entente is perceived as the stronger military side on land – as they likely would be with the Ottoman and Italy firmly in their camp – I can easily imagine Britain deciding to content herself with committing her fleet and material resources to her allies but being unwilling to incur the social cost of expending millions of lives and mobilizing a conscripted army.

All in all I think this is a reasonable historical what-if. Admittedly not allowing the Greatest Sea power in the world to move by sea sounds a bit silly but I considered it representing political restrictions – No Entente Cordinale in this timeline?

Clearly a Central Power DoW vs the Ottoman in turn 1 has to be assumed to represent a different political lead-up to the war and not an actual German attack on the Ottomans but that is a flight of fancy I find acceptable.

Anyway I figured wrong, as it turned that the game engine as currently configured does allows the British to use amphibious transport once the Ottoman Empire enters the war on either side – thus rather dramatically invalidating the Ottoman gambit.

Subsequent email correspondence with Frank revealed that he simply hadn’t considered the possibility of an Entente Ottoman Empire. He would give it some thought whether that ought to be changed in any future patch.

I still however think the Ottoman Gamble would make a good addition to the game and it has the advantage of being eminently practical for Frank to implement. We are talking about changing a single line of code. I personally think it would be even better, more balanced, and a far more plausible historical what-if, to simulate a neutral Britain by adding another line of code disabling British strategic movement as well.

So in order to test the feasibility of an Semi-neutral Britain and a Ottoman Empire on the Entente side AdmSpruance and I have agreed a game with the following house rules in effect:

The Central Powers declare war on the Ottoman Empire on turn 1
Russia leaves any forces setup within 3 hexes of the Ottoman-Russian border in a historical deployment where they are.
No British Land forces may be set up outside the United Kingdom

(This simulate that the Entente player should not have prior knowledge of the option)

Until either the Central Powers declare war on a Benelux country or the United States enter the war British Forces many not use Amph movement or rail movement. (This would include HQ’s)

This essentially simulate a semi-neutral but strongly Entente-learning Britain that is only willing to commit her navy and airforce in a way that would be very easy to code and is therefore realistic to ask Frank to implement

So once again we go

The initial plan was simple and cautious. Fight mainly defensively on both main fronts and secure the vulnerable flanks by knocking out Italy and Serbia before the French and Russians could massively reinforce them turning them into bleeding sores.

Two factors were uppermost in my mind. Italy needed to be knocked out before France could rush reinforcements to her and the East front had to be shortened by snipping of the salient of Russian controlled Poland. This meant that Serbia had to wait for me to stabilize the East front.

Again the advantages to knocking Italy out immediately seemed to outweigh the risks. In the first turn the French have no rail moves meaning they would not be able to rush reinforcements into Italy. I had learned from my last game, however, not to over commit German forces to the task. The Austrian army should be able to accomplish the task assisted by no more then 4 German corps. That should free up sufficient forces to size Warsaw with the help of German siege artillery.

In the East light cavalry screens my borders, with infantry garrisons in the Austrian border forts while the Germans are poised to strike directly south to capture Warsaw.

With allied supply shipments to Russia I have no illusions that I’ll stave her into revolution but I could really use the gain myself.

I can scarcely believe my luck in the East as a fierce border fight is won by inflicting 29 losses to taking 28 – talk about a close call - and the Russians retreat east of Warsaw leaving the city ungarrisoned. In the following (2nd) impulse I’ll find myself marching unopposed into the undefended city.

At the end of the first turn operation “free Poland from the clutches of the evil Tsar” has been a smashing success. German forces have even maneuvered into position to strike from the south closing off the salient.

The first turn also saw the elimination of Italy going to plan. Clearly the French had not set up to counter the Italian gambit.

My victory parade in Italy does run into a snag. As I rail forces away to other fronts an Austrian-German forces is send toward the Italian French border to secure some more resources and grain. As they attempt to advance they are repulsed with heavy losses – running head first into a massive French intervention force.

Image

Last impulse of the Sep/Oct 1914 turn: Trying to advance into what looked like empty Italian hexes I suffer 31 strength point losses inflicting 11. If the French can successfully counterattacked my disorganized force and retake Milan and Genoa they might keep Italy in the war.

In the last impulse of the second turn I rush reinforcements into Milan and Genoa and manage – just – to repel a ferocious counterattack on both cities thus assuring the speedy and humane end to the Italian-Austrian conflict.

Image

OK. As I said the first time: One down; now I just have to worry about France, Russia, Serbia, The British empire, The United States, Rumania and Greece. Victory is just around the corner.

Meanwhile the pincers closes on a few Russian corps. I assume it’s mostly probing cavalry but if intelligence can be trusted I do manage to trap some infantry corps in the cauldron as well. Eliminating them proves fairly uncomplicated as they have no fortifications to hide in.

My next major strategic objective: Knock out Serbia. Hopefully before the no doubt massive, French/Russian/Ottoman intervention force I can only assume is being assembled at Constantinople can attack and overwhelm brave plucky little Bulgaria.

While the Serbian army advances into Austria I rail around his flanks as fast as the German/Austrian rail net can carry me. I’m absolutely terrified at the prospect of the Entente linking up the Ottomans and Serbia. I need this front closed down fast.

Unfortunately Belgrade is not quite as empty as it looks when I attempt to advance into the Serbian capital. Since I consider this an absolutely critical fight to win fast both German and Austrian reinforcements continue to pour in as fast as the European rail net can carrier them. Entente intelligence reports an ominous new kind of shell being shipped southwards: Gas. Keiser Ulver has order the use of any and all means to end the Serbian menace speedily

As I rush reinforcements to the Balkans nothing happens on the west front except for continual shelling achieving quite limited results on the German forts. In the East a sort of equilibrium is established with both sides digging in, no doubt anticipating a major offensive by the opponent. I fear this will change once the Russians realize my reserves are being sent south not east. The Russians continually launch cavalry probes against my line. Only later do I realize he is doing so to discover week points.

At the end of 1914 the fighting nations of Europe take note of the Butchers bill.

January 1. 1915. Compared to the historical bloodbath causalities on all sides have been remarkably low. I expect that every belligerent major power have been able to fully replace losses. A rather unusual situation.

Navel action Jan/Feb 1915

Post by ulver »

Given the extraordinary light causalities Germany has had the luxury of heavy investement in navel points. In January the Imperial navy has had enough of the cruel navel blockade of her starving civilians and decides to escort 4 Transports to the US for overseas trade. In January a ferocious navel contest over the Atlantic sea trade follows.

German Nassau (DN) firing on Br King George (DN) : 2 hits
German Helgoland (DN) firing on Br King George (DN) : 2 hits
German Kaiser (DN) firing on Br King George (DN) : 2 hits
German Konig (DN) firing on Br King George (DN) : 2 hits
German Helgoland (DN) firing on Br King George (DN) : 4 hits
German Kaiser (DN) firing on Br King George (DN) : 1 hits
German Konig (DN) firing on Br King George (DN) : 5 hits

I think we can safely say the King George got hammered suffering 18 Hits. I will be awhile before we shall se her in action again.

German Nassau (DN) firing on Br Colossus (DN) : 5 hits

German Helgoland (DN) firing on Fre Martel (PD) : 5 hits
German Kaiser (DN) firing on Fre Martel (PD) : 3 hits
German Konig (DN) firing on Fre Charlemagne (PD) : 4 hits

8 Hits on a French pre-Dreadnought – one strongly wonders if she is even worth fixing. She must be one floating wreck.

German Helgoland (DN) firing on Br Argyll (CA) : 1 hits

German Kaiser (DN) firing on Br Minotaur (CA) : 5 hits
German Konig (DN) firing on Br Minotaur (CA) : 3 hits

German Helgoland (DN) firing on Fre 2nd (DD) : 5 hits
German Kaiser (DN) firing on Fre 3rd (DD) : 4 hits
German Konig (DN) firing on Fre 1st (DD) : 4 hits

My U-boats have been utterly incompetent in this war, so the Kaiser ordered his battleships to help them out.

German Blucher (BC) firing on Br 7th (Tr) : 1 hits
German Roon (CA) firing on Br 1st (Tr) : 1 hits
German Yorck (CA) firing on Br 1st (Tr) : 1 hits
German Blucher (BC) firing on Br 3rd (Tr) : 2 hits
German Yorck (CA) firing on Br 2nd (Tr) : 1 hits
German Blucher (BC) firing on Br 6th (Tr) : 1 hits

In terms of allied shipping. That can’t good.

Obviously the Hochseeflotte doesn’t get away scout free

British King George (DN) firing on Ger Nassau (DN) : 4 hits
British Bellerophon (DN) firing on Ger Nassau (DN) : 4 hits
British St.Vincent (DN) firing on Ger Nassau (DN) : 3 hits
British Colossus (DN) firing on Ger Nassau (DN) : 2 hits
British Orion (DN) firing on Ger Nassau (DN) : 2 hits

15 Hits on one Schlachtschiff. Almost as bad as poor King George

British King George (DN) firing on Ger Helgoland (DN) : 5 hits
British King George (DN) firing on Ger Helgoland (DN) : 1 hits

British Achilles (CA) firing on Ger 5th (Tr) : 1 hits

One of the heroic German transports doesn’t make it. Even so 3 do, making this a celebrated German navy victory. Gaining precious overseas grain for starving German women and children as well as inflicting 64 hits for only 22 suffered in return. In the end the Hochseeflotte can proudly declare control of the Atlantic.

Image

So far my decision to invest in transports rather the U-boats have been a smashing success. Given the extremely light causalities suffered on all sides in the land war so far I even briefly play with the idea of laying down the keel for a German cruiser just to mock the British navy. In what is possible an act of arrogance the Kaiser orders the German fleet to stay at sea for an additional turn.

Navel Action Mar/Apr 1915

Post by ulver »

So how does the German decision to contest the Atlantic further turn out?

First there is an indecisive navel engagement between the Russians and German in the Baltic.

Russian Petropavlovsk (PD) firing on Ger Elsaas (PD) : 2 hits
Russian Petropavlovsk (PD) firing on Ger Elsaas (PD) : 2 hits

German Elsaas (PD) firing on Rus Petropavlovsk (PD) : 1 hits
German Elsaas (PD) firing on Rus Rurik (CA) : 1 hits
German Elsaas (PD) firing on Rus Petropavlovsk (PD) : 2 hits

Let’s just call this even shall we? Meanwhile my U-boats continue their streak of incompetence.

British 1st (DD) firing on Ger 1st (UB) : 1 hits
British 3rd (DD) firing on Ger 2nd (UB) : 1 hits

And no - the Germans U-boats fails to hit anything as usual and have to return damaged to port. Good thing I have ordered up an Austrian Sub. Perhaps it will do better. It is certainly possible to do better as the British promptly demonstrate.

British 1st (Sub) firing on Ger 2nd (Tr) : 2 hits

Yes the British are consistently inflicting more hits with their one sub then the two Germans. I might be able to trade in the Atlantic past the Grand fleet but don’t mess with the British subs in the Baltic

As for that actual Atlantic battle in the Mar-Apr 1915 turn. Well the French fleet scores a marginal victory while the British Dreadnoughts are notable for their absence.

German Kaiser (DN) firing on Fre Jean Bart (DN) : 2 hits
German Konig (DN) firing on Fre Jean Bart (DN) : 3 hits
German Pommern (PD) firing on Fre Courbet (DN) : 1 hits

French Courbet (DN) firing on Ger Kaiser (DN) : 3 hits
French Jean Bart (DN) firing on Ger Konig (DN) : 4 hits

The lone British cruiser that shows up on the other hand gets creamed. Almost unfair: 3DN’s against one lone CA.

German Helgoland (DN) firing on Br Warrior (CA) : 3 hits
German Kaiser (DN) firing on Br Achilles (CA) : 1 hits
German Konig (DN) firing on Br Warrior (CA) : 6 hits

British Achilles (CA) firing on Ger Pommern (PD) : 1 hits

Indecisive, but the net result is more precious overseas grain to Germany.

Navel Action May/Jun 1915

Post by ulver »

Finally, after 2 full turns contesting the Atlantic, the Kaiser decides to run back to port with the High Seas Fleet and, at last, luck runs out.

French Jean Bart (DN) firing on Ger Konig (DN) : 3 hits
French Courbet (DN) firing on Ger Kaiser (DN) : 4 hits

British Bellerophon (DN) firing on Ger Kaiser (DN) : 3 hits
British St.Vincent (DN) firing on Ger Kaiser (DN) : 2 hits
British Orion (DN) firing on Ger Kaiser (DN) : 4 hits
British Iron Duke (DN) firing on Ger Kaiser (DN) : 2 hits
British Colossus (DN) firing on Ger Kaiser (DN) : 1 hits

Both remaining German Dreadnoughts are out of action and it will take some time to fix the 15 hits the Kaiser suffers. One of the German raiding cruisers also takes a beating

British Colossus (DN) firing on Ger Blucher (BC) : 4 hits

Meanwhile, figuring the Entente fleets must all be busy in the Atlantic, the Austrians decides to dispatch a raiding cruiser to catch enemy shipping. Bad mistake:

British Formidable (PD) firing on Aus Maria Theresa (CA) : 1 hits
British Invincible (BC) firing on Aus Maria Theresa (CA) : 3 hits
British Indefatiguable (BC) firing on Aus Maria Theresa (CA) : 3 hits

The Germans do fight back but to little avail:

German Kaiser (DN) firing on Br Colossus (DN) : 1 hits
German Kaiser (DN) firing on Br Orion (DN) : 3 hits

German Kaiser (DN) firing on Fre Jean Bart (DN) : 3 hits
German Konig (DN) firing on Fre Jean Bart (DN) : 1 hits

German Yorck (CA) firing on Br Colossus (DN) : 1 hits

9 Hits inflicted to 29 suffered. Not exactly impressive, perhaps except that Cruiser actually managing to fire back at a DN. Non the less the German breakout into the Atlantic must be considered a success especially considering that German shipping manage to stay out for a 3 consecutive turns.

Image

I don’t care what anybody says. I’m personally waiting on the docks to decorate every single merchant crew making it into Wihelmshaven. The grain they have brought across the Atlantic will keep starvation at bay for years. We may not have beaten the Royal Navy but we sure as hell pulled the lions tail

It will take awhile to fix the German battleships but I’ll have to try this again with 7 transports.

Forget unrestricted submarine warfare. The Kaiser is all for the cruiser rules since so far British subs have been far more damaging then German U-boats, and caused more harm to German shipping then the Grand Fleet for that matter. In fact I’m complaining to the Americans about British Subs sinking German liners with women and children aboard without warning. Please note the contrast with the always-honorable Imperial German Fleet having conducted her anti Merchant operations exclusively with cruisers - no doubt giving the crew plenty of time to get in the lifeboats and putting captured crews safely ashore in neutral US harbors.

Image

Oddly enough I have so far failed to se any Entente diplomatic activity at all while I do everything I possibly can to suck up to the Americans.

Sitzkrieg in the West

Post by racndoc »

I guess that I just dont "get" the naval combat in this game. I put all 5 British DNs in one TF in the North Sea and Ulver somehow gets DN King George to detach from the other 4 DNs and take on the entire German High Seas Fleet by herself. Then the other 4 British DNs in the North Sea stand by only to watch the High Seas Fleet sail past them to raise havoc in the North Atlantic.....sigh...

Same thing happened the same turn when I played GoA against Lascar.....the turn Germany gets their 4th DN he also sortied into the North Sea and hammered my 5 British DNs. I wonder if there is some kind of gunnery advantage for Germany hardcoded into the game.

With minimal casualties for the TE the R&D effort is greatly advanced...Im researching everything but gas and ASW.....and Ulver wouldnt dare use unrestricted sub warfare and trigger early US/British entry.

Germany is greatly outnumbered in the west as the TE completes a 2nd line of fortifications:

THE EASTERN FRONT

Post by racndoc »

Besides research, Britain has embarked on a sub building program as they seem to do a better job of interdicting the German transports than do the DNs.

Germany seems to be also outnumbered on the Eastern Front. 2 gas attacks were used to subdue Serbia. 9 more gas attacks and then Germany's offensive potential is done.

Besides R&D and subs, the TE are also building a massive transport capability so that all the US and Brit corps can be rushed to the front in 1917.

Serbia is pretty much done and will surrender at any moment. I think that the main focus of the CP after Serbia will be to attack Turkey and stop the Brit Lend Lease to Russia.
