Even nine year olds can, and do, read.....

Post by DD696 »

I had typed this up earlier today, then decided not to post it and deleted it. However, upon seeing that the poster responded with the comment "good" in "The Thread" when told that he had offended someone, I have decided that it deserves to be said.

I can never figure out why crude language is tolerated in these forums by those who read the comments, by the moderators who are supposed to moderate the forums, and by the Matrix staff itself. I have three grandchildren, and two of them are old enough to read. In the thread "Where is the long-awaited next patch?", the poster of post #23 uses quite vulgar and vile language and nobody other than myself seems to find it offensive (and the smiley face does not make it any better). Why is that? Granted, one of the letters of his seven letter word has an asterick in it, but even nine years olds can see thru that type of thinly veiled disguise. Who would like to explain this to a child?

I was going to post this in the General Discussion area of the Matrix forum, but I go there and find a thread entitled "M F's yup" and decided that that apparently is no place for appropriateness either.

Is this language appropriate? Should we all post as poster #23 does, or should there be some type of standards enforced? Sadly, I think that hardly anyone cares......certainly not the poster of post #23.

I think this is true.. and possibly sadder is that 9 year olds might not hear that word, but by the time they are 18 it will constitute 50% of their spoken vocabulary.

There should be a course.. swearing with eloquence..

I think you mean post 22, It seems that some people think that putting in an asterix or mispellng a word makes it acceptable. I also believe that Terminus believes he is bullet proof and nothing will hurt him.
Its time for the moderators to start squashing posters who are deliberatly offensive (not just having a disagreement, but rude & crude)

I suppose we could always "put up a blackban" against any new product he is involved with and which he often appears to be spokesnman for.

Generaly the use of such language is avoided in polite conversation, amongst folks who are not familiar with one another, I of course feal it should be avoided around children, but adults swear for many obvious reasions, so their no nead to explane why one would, and if you are ofended by it then well, consider the source and move on. Kids hear that kinda language all the time, its the parents responsabality to inshure they understand when and whear to use it, if you dont think it should ever be used then well, you have made a life choice, not everyone feals that way of course. Sorta like expecting everyone to beleave your choice of religon is the way to be, live and let live.

A lot of the time folks will say use language you would around your mon, or wife, well I always wounder what kinda fantsy wourld they live in, its probaly a lot easer to just say "G" rated, of course we spend a lot of time poundering the events of a war around hear that would be rated "NC-17", so...

I dont swear much because I dont want to get booted off the boards, not because I think less of those who do, I am not going to judge a man by that.

I, for one, found the post sarcastic and funny, exactly the way it was intended, I'm sure.

Granted, one of the letters of his seven letter word has an asterick in it, but even nine years olds can see thru that type of thinly veiled disguise. Who would like to explain this to a child?

If it's a nine year old, the odds are they will be explaining it to you. [:D]

I have a 10 year old son. We monitor EVERYTHING he looks at on the internet. There is much, much worse that any child can be exposed to out there, and almost no website that you can let them read without monitoring it. This one is no exception.

If we actually have a 9 year old not only browsing but reading through these particular forums they have to be a special case indeed. I would go so far as to suggest that such a lad would hardly be threatened by earthy language.

For the most part we have males(sorry you special female you)who are past 30 yrs old and climbing like an early war zero! Many have also been in the military in various countries armed forces and even if not through sheer life experience we have all heard our share and more of harsh language.

The post in question (#22), which is then repeated several times as part of subsequent posts by others, seems to me to be clearly against the policy laid out in the sticky post about acceptable behaviour (Complaints - Moderation). So while many people may think that the comment is acceptable adult humour (and I would not argue with that), I certainly would not say it in front of my wife or child.

In that respect I agree with DD696, and I don't think that kind of language is necessary on this type of forum.

For those who get all wound up about this kind of thing, please note the little link at the bottom right corner of each post that says, "report." If you don't like it, sic the mods on 'em.

Now, how about a nice game-related conversation or some innocuous humor?
Put my faith in the people
And the people let me down.
So, I turned the other way,
And I carry on anyhow.

You can always "green buttton" people you find offensive or just don't like to have to deal with.
Terminus has been around the block a few times on these forums and has rubbed some folks the wrong way for some reason.
DD696, sorry you are offended by censored language.
Feel free to green button, it works like a charm.
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

This is a family friendly forum and foul language, even when thinly disguised, is not acceptable.
