Newbie Question

Post by Lockmart Lawndart »

I just bought this game and am amazed by its complexity

My question is, Suppose I have a BB with 69 Flt damage, and its only getting higher as it crawls to its home base. I was wondering, would it be better to park it at a nearby small port and hope the ships crew can save it or do I let it limp another 30-40 hexes back to port?

Thanks in advance

Any port is better than trying to limp back home to a major port.
Even if that port is only a level one.
Allied damage control was very good but with 69 flt damage I would make a port of call at the nearest port asap.
Good luck with your game and welcome aboard.[:)]
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

Welcome to the madhouse, LL. Do as Gem35 recommends, and if you have a repair ship (AR), send it to the port you're parking your battleship at, and let it help repairs.

Four ARs would be even better.

I had a sub {Argonaut} with 90% flotation at a size one or two port and she survived.  She had hit one of her own mines.

Hermes put into Andaman Island after tangling with KB.  Her flotation was in the high 80s and they were able to pump her out.  But with 99% Sys damage, I imagine she is a burnt out hulk of no use for a couple of years.

Definitely put into a small port to help pump out the flotation and do not leave till flotation is gone.  I sent a large AP {in Uncommon Valor} from Port Moresby with a little {less than 20%} flotation and she never made it to Noumea.

Do watch out for enemy air power. I did something like this and had an AR and a CA sunk cause I forgot how far Betty's can go.[;)]

Yep, and it is very difficult to explain to one's wife why you are cursing someone named "Betty" after three of your battleships get torped....Thankfully my wife's name isn't Betty, which is why I survived

I had USS Alabama take two torpedoes from an I-class sub east of Truk on one of my carrier raids, and she limped into Kwajalein harbor with SYS damage of 70.  Once all the flooding and fires were fixed, I sent her on the way to Pearl Harbor, but the SYS damage climbed to the high 80's and she was only moving 1 hex/turn with only Johnston Island nearby (about 10 hexes).  I rushed two AR's from Pearl there and Alabama made it to the port with a SYS of 92.  A week later her SYS damage was down to 60 and I got her to Pearl with no further problems, but she'll probably be out of the war since it's already early 1944.

SS I-8 took 20 Depth Charges NE of Pearl ... somehow she limped back to Kwajalein, and just in the nick of time ... (pic)

But the best is I-5 hit off Canada, managed to repair 47 Float damage down to 10 before hitting Sendai. Details here ... fb.asp?m=1866809

While I'm here I might as well ask, has anyone noticed how upon arriving at port, many ships Float damage increases substantially that turn ... Do they all get heavy handed by tugs and dock workers or is this after someone has given them the once over ? [&:]

Japanese damage repair teams suck, basically.  I've gotten reports of major warships sinking in port after I beat the fire out of them and figured they were saved after they got to even big ports like Yokohama and Singapore.

Floatation damage alone doesn't say very much, sys damage is important, too. If a ship has low sys damage, it can survive even huge floatation. Once I had sent a Japanese sub close to Ceylon in turn 1. It was caught one or two days later by a ASW group and got 91 float damage - but only 11 sys. It limped all the way back to Saigon and survived. On the other hand, a shiop with 50 sys and 50 float is in deep trouble for the Japanese.  The Allies have better damage control, but the big picture is the same: Both values are important.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. (Benjamin Franklin)
