Leader Training Units.

Post by Champagne »

Does a Leader such as Hardee or Bragg need to have the units that they are Training actually attached to them?

Or is simply being in the same region as the units they are training enough?

What I'm thinking here is this: If I make Bragg or Hardee an AC or TC, will they still be able to train units that are
in the same region with them, even if the units are not attached to the Leader (because AC and TC may not have
attached units)?

Thanks.

Nope

7.1 Training Militia and Mounted Units
Militia/Mounted units that successfully train are converted into Infantry/Cavalry units. Up to two times per turn, during each post-movement logistics phase (8.0), supplied militia and mounted units will automatically attempt to train.
Units are trained by a leader acting as a training officer using their applicable infantry or cavalry training rating. If the unit is attached to a leader, the training officer is that unit’s Unit Commander. Units that are not attached to a leader will use as their training officer the leader with the highest training value that still has unused command points and the leader will expend one command point per unit he assists in training (successfully or not). Army and Theatre Commanders will perform this duty for unattached units. All Confederate leaders have one added to their training ratings when they are training Militia or Mounted units.

Been thinking about it. The problem with Bragg or Hardee as TC is that the 4th star takes a lot of 400 promotion points. 2ndly any unattached unit won't be able to react into defensive combat because they won,t have leader movement bonus's. 3tdly, Hardee 3 admin don't bother as TC. As TC Bragg can get to TC 3 star 17 command 4 admin lickety split. But the 4th star takes time and 20 command is out of reach beacause after 16 command minor vic's or success's don't count towards command improvement..

I'm leaning, get Joey Johnston as the 2nd tc . The 1 or 2 major vic's to get his command to 20 as TC. With 4 star 20 command 4 admin he's solid.

I'm thinking Sammy Cooper's good as TC with 4 inf training 4 star 16 command 4 admin in Richmond. Groom Alex Lawton 6 admin 3 inf training 2 political as his long term replacement. Starts on the map in SC? Use him as primary fort builder and carry untrained militia to train so the success points take him to 16... ...by that point the war is won or lost.

AC's polk Hampton Forrest, Lee?? 3 inf 2 art guys's like Bragg +5 or greater command have value as port fort defenders 3 inf/militia 1 art 1 h art.

Nope ....

I think that 'Nope' part might have been directed at my ignorant post on the subject, which some kind soul has apparently deleted. I was thinking movement points instead of command points. It makes senses to me that militia shouldn't train if it moves, but that's not the way it works. I just tested this, moved all the militia & leaders strategically and they still trained if they are with leaders with command points, just as the rules say. [X(]

Thanks for the correction Harvey.

Something is going on with the training of militia I don't understand.
I filled Meade (4 infantry training rating) up with miltia (12 units), and none of them trained.
I did run out of supply, so maybe that's the reason these guys didn't train. Or something else disables training? It's hard to believe 12 units would fail at 2/3rds chance.
Perhaps just terrible luck?

Actually, at an ITR of 4, there is only a 1/6 chance per unit that it will train up. Still, bad luck, but not that bad for a single turn. On the average, you should have 2 units per turn train under a leader with those stats (12 Cmd, 4 ITR).

Oops...I neglected a couple of things. First, militia and mounted units have TWO opportunities to train each turn - during each of the post-movement logistics phases. Secondly, they do have to be supplied to attempt to train. Therefore, if they are supplied, your average, for a 12 Cmd Union leader, ITR of 4, fully stacked with militia should get an average of slightly less than 4 successes per turn. Sorry for any confusion.

I wonder if one of those two phases is dependent on the unit and/or not leader moving. It's hard to tell, and the rules aren't really clear to me.

I was wondering about that and thought only each side only trained during their own post logistics training phase. I was wrong.

The implication is you can attempt to train newly created militia during the other side's post movement logistic phase if you have a leader in the spawing region.

Nice.
