What To Do?
I'm letting my UV PBEMs wind down and am resisting starting any new ones as I'm an addict who's suffered burn out. I find it very hard to deal with the bugs of the game and keeping my head in them too.
So what's an addict like me supposed to do with the free time I'm finding myself with?
Yes I've got a couple of WITP PBEMS (short scenarios) going and 2 UV PBEMS still continuing, but this is way down from my usual load.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

RE: What To Do?
the best way to avoid as many bugs as possible is to set specific house rules with your opponent. sure, you can not eliminate all bugs, but such things like too effective 4E bombers, night attacks with 300 carrier planes without any significant loses...can be avoided by house rules. thats better then nothing.
and if you need a kick, then play the japanese and try to win without the lame "i put all i have into the battle and get an AV although i lost half of my fleet" tactic.[;)]
let us hope, that WITP AE or carrier force are released soon...its true, that for UV, the "air is out of the balloon slowly" after so many years. its time for a alternative.

Those things aren't bugs though. There are things that are modeled in an incorrect manner as many will attest to, but they're not bugs.

Speaking of which, is there a scenario available that covers June '42 to Dec '43 but does not include the ships lost at Midway?

I'm surprised I missed that one after all this time. Thanks

Sounds like Todd's in withdrawl; play some Pacific Flight Sims until you forget abt UV, then rediscover it again.

RE: What To Do?
maybe by then Matrix will have been talked into doing something about the air values too!
RE: What To Do?
Flight sims are out of the question as I stink as a pilot. I don't enjoy games where thinking isn't at a premium.

I always walk away from UCV for about 6 months and then drift back because the game can be so darn compelling and then after about 3 turns I recall all the same old same old issues.
I picks up Guns of August and am finding it to be an interesting and different challenge from a lot of war games.

I presume this is a reference to our game that you ended.
Yes, in real life the Allies would not have conceeded defeat just because they lost control of an AV base.....but in the game thats what happens.
After my heavy early losses and your building up of PM into an untakeable fortress, I had no option but to go for the AV. I have played enough times as the Japs in the past to know whether or not I had a chance of holding out through 43, and this was not an option in this game.
It is not my fault you left those bases in question almost undefended. Ironically it was only October 42 and I had'nt even took Luganville and you threw in the towel[&:]

the tabletop version of Guns of Aug was very fun

If the Allies put everything into Port Moresby or an early assault on Lunga and leave their rear open...I think it´s fair enough for the Japanese player to jump behnd them and take an Auto Victory base and win the game.

RE: What To Do?
Maybe somebody can explain to me why people play a game that they do nothing but bitch & moan about? Maybe they can explain why they keep playing the game despite one of it's basic components being AV, which they think is unfair.
If you think that getting an AV is easy for the Japanese player, think again.
Between 6/42 (late) and 7/42 is the earliest time frame for a Japanese attempt that has a chance of success. Cry that the Allies are to weak to stop it? Well let's say the Japanese player has taken Luganville (most common). He must now also take and hold EPV or the P-39s will kill him. He must keep the base in supply and keep the USN away from his transports. Have you ever had damaged IJN ships try to get to Tulagi from the NHs area? It ain't easy. You can't base ships at Luganville because the Allied LBA will knock the crap out of the port.
If the Allied player is smart he builds up the experience levels of his LBA by keeping PM (if the Japanese hold it) a crater. Then bring the squadrons over to main event and start by leveling the airbase at Luganville. Keep it closed and hit the port to destroy supplies. All the while these same planes are given the primary mission on Naval Attack. By November you launch your assault on Luganville under cover of P-38s and naval air.
Don't let the Japanese player sneak a huge supply convoy into Luganville towards the end of the year. Stop it at all costs.
Once the Allies hold Luganville it's time to start rolling up the Japanese defenses, which will be weak as everything went into the AV attempt.
It's important to remember to never, I repeat never, not have an adequate garrison at AV bases. This is even more important once 1943 rolls around because if the Japanese player sneaks up on you and hits hard enough and takes Luganville (example again) he just needs enough (2X) supplies and hold it for the 1 day and it's game over.
Keeping enough cover at bases to protect them is something historical.
Remember above all else this is a game. Nobody dies and it's impossible to recreate real life and all of it's vagarities in a game.

There are auto-victory hexes? Really? Didn't know it.
That said, I dislike anything that is "auto-victory" since taking Noumea and losing everything else means nothing. The concept of an auto-victory, especially in UCV, makes precious little sense. Games that give an "auto-victory" for taking a foes capital or something makes some sense but any of the many meaningless islands in the South Pacific can't be that vital. Functionally if the Japs take Noumea or Louganville they should pretty much win because they'll maul USA reinforcements and that is meaningful way to win not just automatically winning. I understand these are hard challenges, I've tried to take both vs the CPU and that is rough I can only imagine a human foe is much, much worse.

Against good Allied players it really is just about impossible I think. I won´t say totally impossible because anything is possible but extremely...extremely unlikely.

Well, here is where I ask you to accept ¨game¨ over ¨reality¨
Auto victory bases are in the game to prevent the Allied player from putting everything into Port Moresby or an early assault on Lunga or somewhere else.
No it´s not realistic the Allies would have surrendered if the Japanese had taken Luganville...but for political reasons, training the ground forces or whatever reason they didn´t or couldn´t.
So that´s what they are there for. ( my opinion)
Might have worked out better if they had a release for offensive operations time limit for some of the Allied ground forces. Similiar to the Australian home guard that can´t leave Australia.

RE: What To Do?
Since Amercican fighters can't reach Luganville from Noumea all escort for raids on Luganville must come from Efate. Fighters at Efate may, or MAY NOT escort bombing runs from Noumea, which means to be effective the bombers must also be stationed at Efate.
Since Efate doesn't have self renewing supplies, in order to maintain an air offensive against Luganville the Americans are faced with the daunting prospect of getting supply transports through to Efate, while attempting to keep Efate from being pummeled into teh ground in the same manner that PM gets early in the game.
The Japanese player can also make bombardment runs on Efate at his liesure as his bombardment TFs wil have complete air cover from either Luganville, Irau or Lunga.
The incredible range of the Japanese planes allows the Japanese player to both cover Luganville and threaten Efate from as far away as Irau and even Lunga in addition to tehhfighters he will most assuredly station at Luganville after taking it.
Everything about the scenario is heavily stacked in the Japanese players favor.
