More Movement Questions from a Newbie

Post by Harrybanana »

Sorry Frank (or whoever else can answer this) but I have some more questions about movement. Tell you what Frank, for all your patience in putting up with my pestering, once I've played the game long enough to consider myself experienced I'll write a Guide to the rules for Newbies. If you haven't already figured it out I'm the type of guy in every group of wargamers who always reads the rules from cover to cover 3 or 4 times and then explains the rules to everybody else (of course always leaving out those one or two lesser known rules that are only revealed at a critical time in the game).

Question 1:
a) Suppose there are a stack of 4 weakened enemy corps in hex A and another 4 stronger enemy corps in adjacent hex B. The enemy orders the 4 corps in hex A to move to hex C (a less hazardous location) while ordering the 4 corps in hex B to move into hex A. However, I attack hex A from adjacent hex D and manage to move my first unit in before any of the enemy units in hex A manage to move, thus effectively freezing them all in place. What happens to the enemy units in hex B? Do they move into hex A causing it to be overstacked or do they stay in place?

b) If the former, which units will defend against my attack? The original weak units or the stronger units which moved in from hex B?

Question 2:
a) I have observed that strategic movement does not take place until after combat, is that correct?

b) If so what happens if the hex you are intending to strategically move into is captured by the enemy? Does your unit not move at all, or is it moved into the closest friendly hex adjacent to the hex you wanted to move into which does not cause overstacking?

c) If the answer to b) is that you don't move at all, do you get your rail points back?

d) What happens if the hex you want to move to is not captured by the enemy but one of the hexes along the route your unit was travelling to get there is captured but there is still an alternate route available?

e) What happens if you can trace a route to your destination hex during the orders phase but can not after combat is resolved?

f) What happens if one of the hexes along the route your unit must take to reach it's destination is attacked by the enemy, but not captured?

Question 1:
a) Suppose there are a stack of 4 weakened enemy corps in hex A and another 4 stronger enemy corps in adjacent hex B.

The enemy units moving from Hex B to Hex A will attempt to move but if the hex is full they won't.  Any units in Hex A that were able to leave will leave room for Hex B units to enter.

b) If the former, which units will defend against my attack? The original weak units or the stronger units which moved in from hex B?

The original weak units
Question 2:
a) I have observed that strategic movement does not take place until after combat, is that correct?

Yes
b) If so what happens if the hex you are intending to strategically move into is captured by the enemy? Does your unit not move at all, or is it moved into the closest friendly hex adjacent to the hex you wanted to move into which does not cause overstacking?

The latter is correct.  If there is no such hex it doesn't move.
c) If the answer to b) is that you don't move at all, do you get your rail points back?

Yes
d) What happens if the hex you want to move to is not captured by the enemy but one of the hexes along the route your unit was travelling to get there is captured but there is still an alternate route available?

The alternate route is chosen but that may mean extra rail capacity is needed.  if that's not available no movement happens.
e) What happens if you can trace a route to your destination hex during the orders phase but can not after combat is resolved?

Then the unit doesn't move.
f) What happens if one of the hexes along the route your unit must take to reach it's destination is attacked by the enemy, but not captured?

No effect
