If a tree falls...

Post by The Gnome »

... and no one is there to hear it..

I'm absolutely thrilled with almost everything I've read about AE. After reading the amazing AAR The Elf posted he left me with a question revolving around something he mentioned regarding torpedo duds and various calculations the combat routines make.

Are we as players ever able to see the "truth" of the engagement? That is see all the calculations in a combat? All these great routines are almost as good as not there if we can never see them. I understand most will want this obscured for fog of war reasons, but I'd actually like to see everything unfold.

You can turn off FoW as you can today, but you still won't see the calculations themselves.

I'm not looking for the exact calculations, I'd just like to see all the factors that influenced the combat.

Examples of feedback from the app I wouldn't mind seeing:
Can I see which misses are duds?
That the Radar helped an intercept... or not.
If there was some feat of damage control that got the flooding or fires under control.

I don't know all the factors they modeled into the routines but I'd love to see more feedback. Stuff like that adds immersion for me.

Either way, this is a purchase for me, I'm climbing the walls waiting for this :)

Okay, then I misunderstood you. The three examples you quote are indeed displayed when the turn is running, along with many others.

Actually this DOES have an answer (and a correct one at that).

Q: If a tree falls in a forest and there is no one to hear it, does it make noise? A: No. By definition, noise MUST be heard to make noise.

Q: If a tree falls in a forest and there is no one to hear it, does it make a sound? A: Yes. Any disturbance of air molecules actually creates a sound. It may not be detectable by the human ear (which in this case isnt present anyways), but it still makes a sound.

So much for your Cliff Claven moment of the day

But isn't this still subject to a die roll?

How about in the combat report? I really hate to waste all the time it takes to run turns with animations on, let alone site there and try to catch all the messages.

No, the only way you are going to see all that detail is turn on the animations and set the delay way down and take 2 hours to resolve a turn. Personally, I dont have the patience for that.

This would be nice to address in a patch.

At least the Z key (and the spacebar to cancel it) helps to speed past the uninteresting combats and only watch the details on the important ones. That way it only takes 2 hours on the really, really interesting turns [:)]

At the moment, I can get through resolving a 2-day turn cycle in about 5 minutes or so, with use of the "Z" key.

is the z key not the prime suspect in all 'out of sync' crimes?

IIRC the "ESC" is the prme suspect not the "Z"... [;)]

All the 'z' key does is to make all of the delays = 0.0 BTW, it seems that any alpha key will do this.

Wow, came back after the weekend and didn't expect this thread to be living. As mentioned above, it would be great (in a patch) to capture all these messages in the combat reports. Also what would be great to capture are the new arrivals at the end of the turn. I always have a tendency to miss those when I'm running for a fresh beer.
