Repeating Display Messages

Post by DCWhitworth »

Several PBEM games I'm in are repeatedly showing the display messages for surrenders, declarations of war etc even several months after the event.

I haven't paid close attention but as far as I can see they are appearing at an appropriate point, it's just replaying old messages from months back.

Is this happening to others ? Is it intended in the design ? It's not causing an issue it's just a mild irritation.

I haven't seen it for a few weeks, but that could be because I'm only playing AI games. I DID see it in the PBEM game I'm in at 1.03.14.

I am running the 1.03 version and see this all the times throughout all of my PBEM games. It's just annoying so I was just ignoring it.

Don't forget about the flip side, Marshall: Messages also come out about phantom surrenders, as well.

However, we've proven (in our game, anyhow), that they are true phantoms. They do NOT impact the game in any way (like, re-applying PP gains/losses, for instance). It's just the message window (which means, it's a "minor" or a "tweak", not major or critical).

I haven't seen these yet, but I guess it's just a matter of time.

I THINK (don't know, but believe) that you have to have been a participant in a war with one of the powers in order to see the messages. I DO know that not everybody sees them.

I'm sure that if Marshall finds it and figures it out, we might get a good chuckle knowing what happened. This sure sounds like one of those "somebody forgot to tell the display module that the war was over" situations. Kind of akin to, in the computer world, "Is it plugged in?"

I don't think PBEM games are clearing the news buffers properly.
I'll give her a go after I catch up in Mantis.

I just confirmed tonight (in CleverDevils, which NeverMan is also in): I got three phantom declarations of war and two phantom surrenders (all five in succession). So, it definitely works both ways.

Were these from previous turns (valid earlier) and just repeating?

From previous turns. The surrenders were from the war between France/Spain vs Austria (one each). The declarations were from that war (France vs. Austria) and two from the current war (GB and Austria vs. Turkey).

Oddly, one of Turkey or Russia declared war on the other BETWEEN those two wars. Yet, that display message did not show up.

I have a feeling that not all messages are getting buffered to the same place, and only one of them is failing. Note that Russia (NeverMan) says he did not get any messages, yet, on the same turn, I got 5, going two steps after him in the phase.

Yes this is exactly the same issue I've been referring to. Previous messages being replayed.

I believe that is correct. But, since it's a negative assumption, everybody who has seen it should chime in, thusly:

I have only seen this symptom in PBEM games, never with an AI. All of my games have either been 100% human or 1 human and 6 AI, though.

I've only seen it in PBEm but I haven't played much non PBEM recently. However I've got it in a mixed 3 player, 4 AI PBEM game.

The bolded part is why I phrased mine like I did. Now Marshall can target the PBEM buffer code.

Also, do you know if the phantom messages were from just the humans, just the AI, or a combination?

Definitely a combination. I've seen AI on AI, Human on Human and Human/AI and AI/Human
