Map Orientation

Post by brucha »

Since I upgradeed to v.8.3 and installed Enhanced I have noticed a change in Long Campaigns - battles fought in North Africa have me attacking or defending from the west (left side of the map). I have checked battles from 1940 to 1943 and they all set up the same, as if I am attacking east, towards Eygpt instead of the other way around. Is this a mistake?

The east-west force orientations are not always absolutes. For example, in the long USMC campaign, the island assaults ALWAYS have the Marines approaching from the left, i.e. attacking towards the US West Coast. The geographical direction perspective is no big deal to me, as the left side of the map could represent east, west, north or south. Note that you never have the opposing forces approaching from the top or bottom of the map.

Ah, good. I thought there was a problem with my upgrade and was worried. For some reason, I thought that battles followed some certain east-west direction, according to which theater you were fighting in.

Also consider that some battles, especially the Pacific Islands, an attack had to come from the west due to suitable landing beaches/terrain (I believe Guam was one of those). I don't mind the positioning much, but it does kind of add to the feel of advance or retreat if the orientation is correct. North - South would be cool, definitely different feel, but not worth the effort to program I'm sure.
