Official word on the map

This revised and updated turn-based grand strategy game from the team at AGEOD brings players back to World War I, including both the Eastern and Western fronts and over 4 campaigns and 10 scenarios. As either a member of the Central Powers, the Entente or a neutral nation, players will confront the epic gauntlet of military and political challenges that faced the likes of Kitchener, Joffre, Luddendorf, Clemenceau, Czar Nicholas II or Enver Pasha.

Official word on the map

Post by JudgeDredd »

Either from devs or users...

I've heard it's at an angle...I want to ask the devs...
Is this going to be altered

And I want to ask users
Do you get used to it

Hearing about the angle it's on is really putting me off at the moment...I'd like to hear either it's getting fixed or it becomes transparent after some use.

From what I have read at the AGEOD forum, rotating the map to a more tradition north is up configuration will take alot of work and so while the idea for the change has not been discounted, it is very low on the priority list of fixes...as far as getting used to it, I have been perusing the full map to get my bearings and it does take some getting used to but it is not impossible....once I get into a game more deeply once a patch or two comes out, I dont think I will have a problem...

PS...one thing I did was open one of my WWI history books to a map and reoriented it to the way the game map is positioned...it has helped alot as a quick reference.....

Perhaps a single page PDF file of the game map could be provided so we can print it out and use as a guide...

Personally, I think you can get used to it. I've seen a few other games oriented this way, though it's certainly not common.

... and totally unneeded. It dates back to the boardgame era where maps had to fit in a box and if by reorienting the map you could get more playable hexes or historically significant areas included there was a case to be made for not going with up == north. Also because your opponent on the other side of the table would have to deal with an inverted orientation anyway.

But in a computer wargame ? <expletive deleted> - even if it saves 20% on the video memory usage any programmer worth his salt should find a way around it. It's simply a bad design decision.

I definitely have concerns re: the map but I'm waiting for the demo to see if I can live w/ the orientation. Also the demo will let me test the game on my one gig (XP) system. BTW, requirement on AGEod site is two gigs and I believe the Matrix site shows only a one gig requirement.

That is a somewhat loaded question, Judge. Folks can get used to just about anything. I'll skip any analogies though. So yes, I am getting used to it.
Over all, the map is really quite functional, and it looks fine.
The first time you scroll straight "east" from Flanders expecting to get in E.Prussia real quick, but instead whined up in the Crimea, you will possibly have some confused thoughts laced with an expletive deleted.
It will grow on you-maybe. It seems that some players have a real problem with the map orientation.

I really muust be like many of you guys and comment estensively on games I haven't even seen. Maybe I can sell editors on a twist of Einstein's "thought experiments"; I'll review games without booting them, just on preceptions.

I can't imagine any reason to rotate the map other than some technical issue that got easier by doing so.

I also can't imagine anybody liking it -- it will always be like electronic itching powder applied liberally -- but I suppose I will get "used" to it.

I don't understand why this is an issue now when the orientation of the map was apparent with the first screen shots over a month ago, and has been a topic on the Ageod forums since then.

Well, I'm getting used to the somewhat unorthodox map orientation.

Considering the deep game design the map is just one, albeit unfortunate, design aspect. On the other hand there are lots of strategic and minor options to play: modern field uniforms for the French in 1914 or intelligence advantage. Mata Hari or Stoßtruppen, going in with Elite troops or spare them for a following attack tactically.

It's not all about map orientation.

I have difficulty adapting to that tilted map ... Ageod didn't confirm if something will be done, but stated that it's not a priority (rightfully).

As for RAM requirements it does work with 1GB under XP (at least), I've no problem with my laptop (that also has a poor integrated graphics chipset..)

[:D] It was, but my Athlon 3500 is running it fairly well now.

It's "an issue" for me because I didn't know about it. I didn't see it in the pics and I didn't hear about it on the forums. The 6 (yep, only 6) pics I saw did not relay the orientation of the map to me. Most of them (the 6!) had other forms on top of them.

Because you saw it on the screenshots and heard about it on the forums, must mean (I guess) every man, woman and child did??

As I already said, I'm not sure it will be an issue, which is why I asked the question.

I've been playing with only 1 gig with no problems under XP with only a 2.4 P4.

As for the map... it really only took a couple turns to get used to it. I'll probably have problems going back to a normal orientation [:D]

Say... Adam's map there looks pretty nice...

That's right, and the more you play the more your brain will expect a sideways view of everything. First WWI game, then football on the TV, your pets, and maybe even your wife.
