Too Many Media Maps

Post by Mobius »

I wonder if having too many media maps is causing the cursor to 'float' in some less powerful systems? I test my maps on an older machine and the Mad Russian also has a less powerful system.

We both notice some of my new maps cause a delay in cursor response. In my maps I have a texture map for the usual terrains plus for foxholes, trenches, fences walls as well as two kinds for roads (to get them dark).
I'm experimenting now with combining all the minor texture types into one to see if that lessens the cursor problem.

If Mapmaker could combine all these niggling, little used, terrain types into one would be nice. Right now I've decided to make the trench, foxhole and all these small items to be foxholes when I create a map. That way they are a single texture map. Later I edit the map and make each the correct key color.

BTW, my experimental map which reduced texture maps has better cursor response.

The more texture layers you define the better your maps will look but the worse the performance will be. The MM allows you to define as many or as few as you want. The balance of looks vs performance is left up to the map designer.

I know this will come as no comfort to you Steve as you can't get 0.9+ to work on your machine, but the later MM supported terrain to AI map and minimap color mapping thereby allowing the map maker to reduce complexity in a more sophisticated way than 0.8. If you reveiw the new MM tutorial I posted I used a much better texture mapping alogrithm in 0.9 which means you can get a superior looking texture effect + overlay (eg darker roads) with fewer texture layers c/w 0.8

I haven't tried the uninstall and reinstall of PCK and the mapmaker to try to get 0.9 to work yet. I have too many mods on that computer. After the next update at the end of the year I'll start over again.

I have used my paint program to change some of the texture maps to make more interesting fields by mixing colors. A splash of this texture a dash of that.
