How to get screen shots from XP

Post by U.S.A. »

Hi. I've done a search on the topic, and I've tried HyperSnap and ScreenShotAssistant. I'm running WIR 3.3 on Windows XP and I just can't seem to figure out how to get screen shots.

If anyone could walk me through it, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for such a quick response Rasputitsa!

I'll give FRAPS a try this afternoon and let you know how it works out.

Thanks very much again.[:)]

Rasputitsa,

Thanks again for your help.

I must be completely inept when it comes to this stuff because I still can't figure out how to make it work. I loaded the game, then I pressed F10 which it said was the "hotkey" for screen capture. All I got was WIR showing me rail lines, but no screen shot!

May I either PM or e-mail you if you prefer not to bog down this site with my inane ramblings?[:)]

Thanks again, and your understanding and kindness are really appreciated.

You need to practise.

Firstly, see if you can take a screen shot of your desk top

Secondly open some modern software such as Word or Excel and see if you can take a screen shot of that

Thirdly , start any game that was originally designed for WIN XP and take a screen shot of that

If all these succeed and you still cannot take a screen shot of this game then: You must return to the 20th century.

Open Microsoft paint.

Start the game

Hit the "Print Screen" key on you're keyboard

Minimise or close the game

In Microsft Paint select "Edit Paste". The screen shot is now ready for editing.

One you have succeeded using any method above, use Microsoft Paint to edit the picture and then upload it to Photobucket so we can all see it.

If none of those work you may now gve up [:)]

Thanks Joe!

I have been able to get all the programs I've tried (HyperSnap, ScreenShotAssistant, and FRAPS) to take screen shots of the desktop and any other programs I've run. I just haven't been able to replicate that success once WIR 3.3 opens.

This afternoon I will engage warp engines and seek time travel back to the twentieth century to put Microsoft Paint to the test![:)]

Thanks again Joe. Very much appreciated.

OK, maybe surrender was an option.[:)]

Tried Paint as well and just can't get screen shots. Someone mentioned needing to use Virtual PC with Windows XP, so I guess I'll look into that.

Oh, well. Back to playing the game.

Thanks again Rasputitsa and Joe 98 for the help.

The most likley cause of the problem is that with the game open, the computer will only accept commands from a key on you're keyboard, if the game was programmed to accept commands using that key.

That would explain why Print Screen does not work with WiR.

I have been using FRAPS with WIR in XP and Vista and using DOSbox. FRAPs is opened in the background and some of the commands it uses are also used by WIR. The F10 key brings up 'rail' in WIR, but simultaneously stores a pic in the FRAPS directory. You just reset the rail display in WIR and carry on [:)]

Thanks again Rasputitsa. I think the fact that I'm not using DOSbox may be the issue.

Since I can open WIR on my XP machine simply by clicking WIR.exe, I never used DOSbox. Since I still can't get screenshots via FRAPS, perhaps running the game with DOSbox may be the next thing I should try.

Thanks for all your efforts and I'll keep trying.[:)]

Success!

DOSbox, along with DOSShell, were apparently the keys. Thanks again for taking the time to help me work it out.

Now to see if I can attach a screenshot. Here goes.

As Axis player, Moscow fell last week of Sept. '41, Leningrad should fall at end of first week Oct. '41, and the drive to Gorki should commence.

Glad it worked and the screenshot is operating, there are more classic games to try with the same system [:)]
