1.05 feedback

Post by Marshall Ellis »

Hey guys:

Tell me your thoughts on 1.05?
Skipping?

BTW: The editor is in the BETA release so that you guys can play around with it BUT I will probably pull it out for the official relase to give me time to add an editor section in the manual.

Thank you

I would leave it in, but turn it off by default. Allow a game owner to turn it on. BUT, if someone turns it on, give them a message that warns that this piece of code is still beta, and is only included for compatibility, etc.

That way, your testers can play with players who run only released software, and still toy with the editor (semi-released).

Oh, and if you DO take it out, remember that the beta testers should test the main code with that piece missing. Their previous testing is invalid against a system without the editor, even if they are testing what seemingly are unrelated issues.

I played some this weekend as Austria & Russia versus AI into early 1806. France was on hard plus about 30 bid points, hoping to see some aggression? I allied Austria and Russia. Turkey DOWed Russia for some reason; Austria answered the call to join. There were some good battles in Bessarabia, but once Austria moved in a couple of corps from the west the Turks couldn't hold. I wiped out everything except 3 cav factors before winter set in. France, meanwhile, took Bavaria and northern Italy but wasn't taking advantage of Austria being at war with Turkey. Even when France and Turkey allied with each other towards end of 1805, France didn't DOW Austria. FWIW, Turkey seems too aggressive and France is still too passive. France appears to be improved some, but still needs to be tougher as a pacesetter. Maybe there's a more optimal AI setting, like medium difficulty plus some bid points?

I finished a game as the French. I took my usual approach to knocking down Prussia Austria and Russia, but turned on alliances for everyone from france. Spain and Turkey accepted. After crushing everyone (the AI is still less than satisfying in battle) I checked the VPs and noticed that Spain and Turkey were way out ahead of me. I declared on each of them and managed to get them to surrender with territory, but was unable to get a grip and last I checked was losing at about 85% to the Spanish and Turkish 115% levels. The game did not end, but I stopped playing. So some extra thought will have to be done with regards to politics.
I got into a couple battles and in one of them the opponent didn't run away! But that still seems to be normal behaviour. I was also attacked by substantially smaller forces.

Good stuff guys! Thanks!
I did a major enhancement to the AI in 1.06 that will make them more agressive in long drawn out wars. They do still stale out in 1.05

Completed 1.05 as Turkey. Fr won in 6/09 at 102%. Severe starting VP problem. as also evident in 2 (as Fr.) games previously tested.

FR: 102%
GB: 85%
SP: 79%
RS: 84%
PR: 82%
AU: 78%
TU: 47%

Tu owned Sweden, Imertia, Ottoman Empire. Georgia, Dalmatia, Denmark, Hamburg, Holstein, Oldenburg, Munster, Luxembourg, Morocco, Portugal and occupied all Sp. Capitals but 3 and held 4 Rs capitals.

Outstanding job by Alex in Circassia. The province changed hands multi times he killed about 6 Feudal Corps.

I like the new "leader removal" if no Corps to attach to at end of combat.

Sp allowed itself to be overrun while its army slept in Bordeaux. No Guerrillas seen.

AI Chit pulling has improved.

A quick bug report for V1.5.

Fleets in the ice zone (at sea) don't appear to be affected by it (ie the computer intercepted me with the combined french fleet which should have been stuck in the ice). Why the computer would move into the ice zone in November is also questionable at best.

Lots of rapid conquering of countries without the usual one turn delay. Even cossacks were doing it.

Leader prisoners were returning to the owning country the turn after capture.

If you start a game without England and France at war then you almost never see 2 major powers go at it. The exception was the AI France declaring war on Russia twice in one year and Turkey doing it's usual DOW in March.

The French did DOW Sweden (Russian Freestate) and did an invasion which was nice to see. More agression on the part of France vs the Germans would be nice.

Cheers!

0000227: AI not picking which combination of minors it can prevent lapse of war state

#227 shows closed for v1.05 but there are still some issues with this. Here's an abbreviated game log from yesterday showing Austrian AI biting off more than it can chew:
1805, May Lapse of War Between Austria and Dalmatia
1805, May Lapse of War Between Austria and Naples
1805, May Lapse of War Between Austria and Papacy
1805, May Lapse of War Between Russia and Georgia
1805, May Georgia Is Now Spain Freestate
1805, May Spain gains control of Georgia
1805, May Dalmatia Is Now France Freestate
1805, May France gains control of Dalmatia
1805, May Swabia Is Now France Freestate
1805, May France gains control of Swabia
1805, May Naples Is Now Spain Freestate
1805, May Spain gains control of Naples
1805, May Papacy Is Now Prussia Freestate
1805, May Prussia gains control of Papacy
1805, May Tuscany Is Now France Freestate
1805, May France gains control of Tuscany
1805, May Austria has declared war On Dalmatia
1805, May Austria has declared war On Swabia
1805, May Austria has declared war On Naples
1805, May Austria has declared war On Papacy
1805, May Austria has declared war On Tuscany
1805, May Russia has declared war On Georgia
1805, May Russia has declared war On Circassia
1805, May Turkey has declared war On Prussia

Austria had taken Romagna in April and had two corps there. It should not have DOWed all three Naples, Papacy and Tuscany? Turkey also overetended itself trying to DOW Circassia and Georgia and then letting war with Georgia lapse. That's just a snapshot, but provides several examples where #227 may need a relook before v1.05 goes final.

Nothing special. I started a new game as Spain and Prussia and noticed what the AI was doing. I'll send you a save.

About the "IA" :

I play 3 games :

1- As France against Hard AI ;
Anything the AI MP do, their VP/incomes increased by xx% so....... nothing to say, nothing interesting !

2- As Spain against neighbourg MP as Hard AI, the others Medium AI
Very easy to conquer all north-africa, all Italy, Build a big navy (Home+Naples+Portugal+Venice)
Victory against all MP at war with (France, Austria, Prussia, Turkey).
Only austria in Italy was a quite difficult to defeat.
France sent his force one by one or by little stack !!

3- As GB (same choice than above for the IA choice).
During 3 years (at least !) : France made a big concentration in Dusseldorf / Prussia in Munster / Austria in Freiburg ! And nobody move !
Notice that Spain made a big stack in Porto.... and no move in 5 years !
Russia made the conquest of Finland and ..... nothing.... except a big stack in Grodno.
Turkey made theconquest of egypt.... and stay in the set-up position.
No moves at all after the conquest of several minor.

I "Talk to an ally" = I request Prussia to attack Dusseldorf and/or Paris : Yes or no but nothing happen !
I request Austria to attack Strasbourg and/or Paris........ nothing.
This several times.
Prussia asked me 47 €........ I gave him........ nothing !
Austria asked me 1 PP ...... I'm Ok but nothing !
A other time, Austria ask me 247 €........ I gave money to him but nothing !
Everytime, the pop windows said that they will accept......... but ???

France fleets in Brest : I made a landing : No France' unit move : I destroy all the french fleets !
Very easy to conquer Italy (except Papacy, Toscane for Austria).
In this case : the big french stack was cut in several parts : one stay, one march to me, and the third go to protect Paris (with Nap.)
I defeated the davout stack in few months (note that this army fight often separatly : 1, 2 corps alone !).
Then I avoid to march to Paris and take all the provincial capital (not garisoned) except Lille and Orleans.
In the following eco phase : France surrender unconditionally. Exit Nap. (France never use him in battle !!!).

In this game (not finished at this time) : no wars at all between the others MP !
Some alliances ....... that all.

In all this games, the ennemy made attack with 1 or 2 corps (with less than 5 factors in total !) against big army !!
The game made attack until his complete destruction.........suicidal attack.

I have seen Turkey DOW Russia, but other AI MPs are passive. In playing last night as Prussia into 1807, France didn't do anything except pick off several minors. Austria AI conquered Italy except Papacy which was pretty good. Russia conquered Sweden/Finland and most of Caucusus area which was also good. I still saw several AI lapse of war situations, including France not moving into Wurzburg and Berg.

I did end up making an alliance with Austria and arranging to have them support me against France, and then I DOWed France. That got interesting until I made a bad chit pull in a major battle around Munster. France and Austria meanwhile were having battles in Bavaria. Once you provoke the AI it responds, but it's still not stepping out on its own against other MPs.

Hopefully v1.06 will energize the AI MPs to be more aggressive and behave like real players. So far, it still doesn't feel right. France needs some historical attitude to set the pace.

The amount of VP/PP the AI gets seriously needs to be changed. It was fine when the AI was playing like a whimsical <sp?> 3 year old, but now that it's playing more catiously, it's hard to win the game unless you win every battle and are constantly at war (which is still totally doable but makes, IMO, for a much less enjoyable game).

I've seen Turkey and Russia alternately dow each other, but then not even move anyone in. Once the Russians didn't even have one single corps or even a (non-cossack) garrison within 2 moves!

The endless phony war in Turkey qualifies as annoying. The Grodno army that never moves while Allies Prussia and Austria burn is gauling.

Though a live player wouldn't do it the AI Rus player should automatically "lend" corps to their Allies PR & AU when DOW'd letting them feed 'em.
