CCWaR+WINE?

Post by pelle75 »

Have anyone tried to play CCWaR in WINE? I have tried to play CC2 (and perhaps CC1/3/4; don't remember for sure) in WINE over the years with different versions of WINE, but never managed to start the game, or most often not even get past the installer. Perhaps if all the DRM and look-for-cd code has been removed now it is more likely that CCWaR will work?

Maybe I should have checked the WINE appdb first. Someone reports success with CoI, and there are some various levels of success with the older CC games. It would be nice to hear from someone playing WaR in WINE (more than just tested that it can start) before I buy, but at least there seems to be some hope.

Guilty!

I'm hoping to try the experiment again once I can free up a more powerful machine.

Thanks! That thread did at least provide some hope. How old hardware did you test with? My most powerful computer is a 4 years old budget laptop with 512 MB RAM. You never tried to tweak some WINE settings to improve performance?

The machine I managed to make it work on was a 1999 Pentium III with 512 Mb RAM, so I'm hopeful that a more recent machine will handle it better. I didn't have to tweak anything. It "just worked" allbeit with a lot of chop.

The other experiment (I'll need to find the link for you) with VMWare was with a machine that had literally been rescued from a skip! No graphics card! Nothin'!

... but like you, I think WINE is the way to go!

Yes, I'd prefer WINE to having to go through all the license etc trouble with a real Windows installation. Thanks again for the info.

I think I'll do some more experiments with old CC2 and CC4 before deciding to buy or not. At least that should give me some general idea of how WaR can work best-case.

Here is that link I promised:

Presume you've done this:

I've managed to wreck both my Linux installs in the last few weeks and will need to bring machines back into line before I can risk further experimentation.

P.S. Almost forgot to give you Cogadh's link:
