Best to try & work out what altitude they are coming over at and put soemthing up at that height or a bit higher. The P5's & US 4E stuff usually comes over at 20k' or higher. Flak will work against all types of reconissance aircraft, although it does tail off with altitude so for the real high-flyers the best way is to have plenty up there waiting for them @ the same height or with a little bit of advantage

This is very hard to do. Luck is more involved than anything else. Be sure not to exhaust your fighter pilots trying to intercept the recon flights.

Recon & search is best conducted at lower altitudes because they can see more.

A recon or search plane will come in and scoot before being detected or being able to be intercepted.  Clouds are a searchers friend to hide in.  To shoot them down, like Ike says, you need to be lucky because a ton of CAP won't make a difference.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

In my experience CAP can get lucky, doesn't seem to be that dependant on size either.
Flak and Operational Losses seem to count for far more of the Recce planes that I've lost.
Recce planes such as the F5 & Diana were a lot faster (being unarmed) than most contemporary fighters in the Pacific theatre, at virtually any range. However flak, particularly once the automatic fuze and (for the US) radar control appeared, losses began to mount
