Crash

Post by Joram »

I installed the game on a second computer, updated video and directx and am still having issues. At random times, screen goes completely blank but no crash log is produced. In fact, I can't even ctrl-alt-del out of it. I have to reset the computer completely. This happened even after I downloaded the latest video drivers. I am using integrated sound on this pc and the drivers are 06 but MS insists they are the latest drivers too.

What can I send you to help analyze the issue?

You might want to post your dxdiag so we could take a look and help advise.  I know some integrated cards are not so good and depending on age may not support directx 9.0c.  You could also try 3d Analyzer.  I've heard talk of it around here and it could be an option it seems if your card is an issue.  If you could post your dxdiag, we can tell more.  [:)]

It's not an integrated card.  It's an Nvidia 8800 GTS.  It's the sound that is integrated.

Well, still happening. This time had a blue-screen and computer rebooted itself. But still no log files from the game?

Any ideas? Here's a dxdiag.

Geez, guess I need to read better or at least more closely.... oh well it was early in the morning and I am gettig old...yeah that's it [:)]

Anyway, I don't see anything that jumps out but I noticed you are usig Vista. Have you tried running in adminisrator mode at all? Admittedly, you should not have to, but it might not hurt to try it. I know it has cured some ills in some programs I have tried on my laptop. (My main gaming machine is a desktop with XP)

Yes, sure have, tried compatability mode too.  No worries, you're being more helpful than Matrix is right now...

Joram,

Shot in the dark ...

Have you tried lowering (or turning off) your settings in the games Display Options?

I mean, if you turn everything off or down to the bare minimums would that help? ... or narrow it down.

Also, since you upgrade or have the latest drivres is there a control panel for the display that you can tweak the settings?

I know for my ATI Catalyst for my card ... sometimes games hate to have catalyst on and sometimes other options need to be set differently ... because I felt that it conflicted with what the game whats to do. I don't have your graphics card so I can't help with suggested settings.

Yes, I did lower my settings and it still happened.  I suppose I could try turning everything to lowest though but if there are other ideas, would prefer that first.

Did you customize any settings in the Nvidia control panel?  If so maybe reset it to defaults; I had a similar issue with my ATI card with a game and it had to do with my settings in the catalyst center.  It is really weird, with your specs on the computer you should not have problems - one would think anyway...

Hi Joram,

Did you try to find updates to those 2006 sound drivers? That's a very old driver date for a Vista system. You might also try a different video driver revision.

Have you turned off all background programs? Have you tried disabling sound in DxDiag or reducing sound/video acceleration to see if that makes a difference?

The fact that your computer rebooted itself really suggest some kind of driver/hardware conflict going on to me.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik, I did in fact look for updated drivers but Microsoft insists those are the latest.  Will try manufacturers website (MSI) to see if there's anything else.

My computer has only rebooted once out of all the times it has crashed with the program however I do agree there is some kind of driver conflict.  Just can't figure out which it is since no error logs are generated by the game.

Terl, there is no customization in the control panel.  Everything is on default settings which is generally letting the application decide.

Will take me a day or so but will report back later after disabling everything I can think of and see what happens.  I agree there is no reason why this shouldn't be working!

If by Microsoft you mean Windows Update, that's rarely up to date with the latest drivers. Definitely go to the manufacturer and sometimes you need to go to the chipset manufacturer.

I haven't had a whole lot of time to test because of Christmas break but I've discovered that it does affect one other game I own.  The only thing that one and this one has in common is that it uses the latest DirectX drivers so it must be something along the latest video drivers and DirectX causing an issue.  I'm thinking of rolling back my drivers to an earlier version as the latest ones don't seem to have solved anything.

I run Jutland, Steel Fury, Call of Duty WAW, T34 vs Tiger and several other brand new games on a brand new high-spec Gaming Laptop and on my high-end desktop with 8800 GTS cards in each of them.  The only game that crashes is Hired Guns and it does so very regularly.  It's so bad it's unplayable now.  I notice that the crashes become more frequent to further I go in a campaign - now crashes in the first 5-6 battles and then more and more until after capturing about 8-9 locations I can't even enter a battle in any of the remaining ones.
