What have I done? A new guy's experience

Post by Lecivius »

This AAR is closed to Boba, with his acknowledgement.

This AAR regards a game being played between myself (a total PBEM beginner, as Allied ) and Boba (experienced Japanese). The idea here is to show the mistakes made by inexperienced players, and to draw comment for those more experienced associated on this forum. I have asked Boba if this is ok, and he has graciously agreed. I hope thoughts, tips and strategies will be discussed here. The opening will be rather lengthy, to show the opening carnage and plans put in motion. I will try to stream line this as it goes.

I already know several areas I screwed up in. Again, please offer any suggestions, critisism, and advice. I may not take it, but it may help myself and other folks just starting out.

Rules are

1. AF rule
No 4E bombers on AF3
No limitation on AF4 and greater (except stacking number limit)

stacking number limit: max 50 airplanes per AF level (AF1=50 planes,
AF2=100
planes etc.)

2. Regarding PDUs:
When using PDUs, no increasing the number of engines on any plane type,
except for upgrading a Catalina (2E) to a Coronado (4E). Any LBA scheduled
to move from a 2E to 4E, either due to aircraft
upgrade paths, or airgroup paths can upgrade. Japanese Army DBs can upgrade
to Army bombers

3. No use of IJA Kwantung troops in China without paying PPs to convert
them to another HQ . CEA troops used outside China must be converted to
other HQ (paying PPs)

4. Atoll stacking rule
Max a division of combat units (equivalent to 2 Brigades or 4 Regiments)
and
3 support units (HQ, ENG, Art, BF and CD falling into this category).
For the purpose of this rule 1 EAB/Seabee = 1 regiment

No more than 1 Div landing in one turn when attacking atoll. After
succesful attack on atoll,
any excess troops should be withdrawn in one month max.

5. No more than 6 ships in dedicated (hunter-killer) ASW TF.

6. No sub, or other unrealistic invasions

Realism:
Ally & Jap Sub Doctrine - OFF
Fog of War - ON
Advanced Weather - ON
Ally Damage Control - ON
Historic First Turn - ON
Player Defined Upgrades - ON
Vary Setup - OFF
December 7 Surprise - ON
Reinforcement Ally & Japan - 0 days

Game Ops:

Game opens.
Pearl Harbor Air capabilities are hit hard. The fleet looses the Maryland. No other ships are lost. 2 BB's are hit hard, the rest suffer mid sys & floatation damage in the 30's. Manila is untouched.
My plan at this time is a Sir Robin to Oz, set up a defensible perimeter from Akyab to Mandalay in Burma, and try to cause as much havoc on invading forces as I can to slow down the opening onslaught. Escaping DEI AK's will gather resources to stock pile in Balikapan, Kupang, Batavia and Soreabaja. Troops in the Maylay Peninsula will fall back to Singapore, to try to find transport out or to hold as long as possible. DEI forces move to establish a concetration in Batavia, Soreabaja and Balikapan. They will fall, but perhaps in going they can really wreck the place. In the PI, troops fall back to Clark & Manila. I will hold Clark as long as I can to try to get air frames out as best I can. Last stand will be in Manila.
Force Z loads as many base troops as possible & heads for Batavia. Once unloaded it will move towards Darwin with the idea of merging with scattered DEI surface assets and engage the Japanese as hard as possible. The 2 american carriers begin 2 hexes apart 6 hexes south pf P/H. They are ordered in a safe arc towards Suva, as are the scatered pacific American cruisers, to hit inevitable invasion forces in the Solomons, and perhaps around Rabaul. Half of the shipping in west Asia is ordered towards Karachi nad Bombay. The rest of the transport shipping is ordered the long, hard road around Oz to eventually beef up delivery of arms & troops from The Aresenal of Democracy. Shipping from Alaska head towards Nome to move troops stationed there to bolster Dutch Harbor. A small supply convoy leaves Seattle to deliver supplies to that area as well.

I make a command decision here. All troops in Wuchow are ordered forward in hopes of catching Canton as unguarded as it will ever be as the Japanese move on Hong Kong. An attack is made on Manila, but my ships have already beat feet. My aircraft make sporadic, and ineffectual attacks on Japanese war ships, ignoring the soft skinned transports

My opennent uses 6 ship ASW forces following his invasion convoys. This tactic works well with the game engine, as ASW attacks appear to go off first. This also increases the chances that convoy escorts will spot & drive off sub attacks before they occur.

RE: What have I done? A new guy's experience

Post by Lecivius »

A Japanese convoy is spotted south of Manila, Headed SW. Turns out to be a STF bombardment group. There is another 11 hexes directly east of Tarakan headed west that are reported as AK's. Turns out to be a STF as well. I'm thinking this may be an attempt to get in far past my front lines, & set up my meager air assets accordingly at Menado, Davao, and Balikapan. And then I get an ugly surprise.

New guy lesson #1. Japanese like to go for any airbase level 4 & up at the beginning, not resource points. This allows maximum carnage from the long ranged Japanese bombers.

RE: What have I done? A new guy's experience

Post by Lecivius »

In the Pacific, I spotted a convoy making for Guadalcanal. The cruiser scratch STF is already headed for Tulagi to refuel from stocks left there. The American Carriers form up into a 2 carrier group, and head in to strike & retire. But Halsey has other ideas...and once he gets out of the hospital I personally plan on shooting that SOB.
Near Ambonia the Japanse have yet another invasion force moving in. Force Z is ordered in at Full speed, and manages an intercept!
Newb mistake #5. Allied surface forces (1) suck this early in the game and (2) will never attempt to attack anything once the escorts are sunk. Two successfull interceptions, into the heart of danger, are a complete waste of time.

RE: What have I done? A new guy's experience

Play goes on. Hard to stay focused after loosing 2 carriers, and watching my in-effective surface forces and pathetic LBA airframes. I also notice that the Jap armies in China are moving on Yenen with over 1012 guns. Kaifing has as many as well. So does the 2 armies outside Changsha. So does Canton. Looks like troops are coming in from Manchuria. I can see why no raid waas done against the ships in Manila at the start. Jap long rang bombers from Davao, Jola and Ambonia will kill them long before they can reach safety.

In the Pacific, the Allied cruiser forces are trying to get around KB & bombers from Truk. There is not much else to talk on, as just about everything the allies have is sunk. Somehow yet ANOTHER invasion force lands on Noumea, complete with bombers. There are also carriers covering this force. With no allied carriers, Boba can spread out KB pretty effectivly. This will cut off Oz from the US.

RE: What have I done? A new guy's experience

Post by Lecivius »

My ships fleeing around New Britain fall on a damaged jap ship. Otherwise, these guys are in SERIOUS trouble. In China there are just to many forces to defend against. And half of my armies are still in the rice paddies. Burma is quiet, but thats because I just dropped everything & ran like hell. The ships around Noumea are ordered to scatter.

RE: What have I done? A new guy's experience

Post by Lecivius »

Ok, The japs have penetrated to Noumea. Oz is in real danger of falling, as their army and supply situation is non existant. I have recalled most of the british transports. they are on their way back to Bombay & Karachi. They will then try to begin resuplly of Oz. At their speed this will take 10 days just to get them loaded. I am considering the South Pacific closed. There are 2 convoys already enrout carrying a CD unit, a base force and an EAB each as well as supplies. I plan on going as far east as the maop will allow, and getting one to Gilli Gilli and one to Port Moresby. Everything else in the Pacific is sunk or badly damaged. Canton is stocked and is rebuilding So is Polyarma and Midway. Dutch Harbor is slowly building into a support base.
My bases in the South pacific keep turning off air base & fort construction. This is annoying as all get out. Same with SW Asia. Also, repairs to infastructure keep turning on.
The cruiser forces in the Pacific are north of New Britain. I have no option other than to scatter them & hope for the best. There are carries everywhere, and Nells just have to long of a range.
I plan on getting whatever I can back to Sydney to repair. I will still hold the river in Burma, and await reinforcements. In the Pacific, I am considering a move to take PJ, just to throw him off balance. Otherwise I am now in a train wreck, waiting to see what else can hit me.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

Let's see if I can get some situation pic's up. ( Pic's are horrible, I'll get better at this as I continue with this AAR)

Here is the Inteligence as of 12/24/41

And the Red area outlines what the Japanese control.

Well, looking over your HR, I think you toasted yourself on the atoll rule.

No more than 1 division landing per turn? You are going to get butchered on the first atoll you try to take.

You have allowed the IJN player to have a division on an atoll, he will build to fort 9.........you will need at least 3X that number of troops to take it away from him. 3X is the number if he builds no forts at all. Atolls are bloody battles. I have butchered many a division trying to take them.

Of course, you can always go the southern route and avoid all the atolls completely.

Also, you have to remember, hit and run away quickly with surface ships.......if you know CV's are around, do not play around with surface fights.

Noumea will hurt. I am guessing that this is stock?
