Recommendations on books

Post by Dereck »

I have gift certificates I've received and since I'm tired of spending them on Oracle books I'd like to get some history books.

I have the 15 volume History of the US Navy in World War II and was wondering if anybody knew if there existed similar books/collections for the US Marines, US Army and US Army Air Corps?

I did find an interesting book on Marine Corps OOB from 1939-1945 but nothing similar to the US Navy history.

Thanks.

The Army has about a 25 volume set informally known as the "Green Books". Many of these are available on line but I like having them available off line as well. The Airforce also has a set and I believe all of these are available online. I'm not sure about the Marines. Oh BTW, my Army set I got from a republisher in the 90s, they were $25 each. Not sure if they are still available from that publisher. But "Abe" or similar could turn them up in the original as well of you want those. Lemme know if you want exact citations.

Would you happen to have the names of the Army and Air Corps books? Or the ISBNs? The gift certificates I have will have to be used at Amazon.com so I have to go through that route.

Thanks.

I'll start working on the "Green Book" series. I checked the ISBN number for the reprint I have versus the original (since I happen to have both for some volumes). And they matched!

So the title "Guadalcanal - The First Offensive" ISBN is 50-13988.

I'll get you some more in a bit.

BTW I'm not sure Amazon will have any of this stuff since the originals were US Government pubs and the reprints were probably special "one off" deals not through the normal "publishing channels" ... so if you must so Amazon way - these sets may not be there ... except maybe through used channel.

Here is a link to an Index of the US Army "Green Books" several of which are online in full. But this shows you the extent of the collection.

Is this the book you're referring to above?

Guadalcanal: The First Offensive - The War in the Pacific, published by the National Historical Society; Commemorative Edition (1993) by John Miller?

If so I couldn't find it with the ISBN (came up with some physics type book) but the listing has an ASIN number (whatever that is) of B000CS1X88.

The full citation for this particular volume of the set is:

Miller, John, Jr., The War in the Pacific - Guadalcanal the First Offensive, Historical Division, Department of the Army: Washington, D.C., 1949.

All the volumes are listed in the link provided above.

Recommend "Shattered Sword" by Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully.

It's a history of the battle of Midway and is available at Amazon. It covers a lot of new ground and shatters some long held myths.
