Don't make your uninstaller into my C:\Windows

Post by sandgamer »

Hello,Matrix Games staff.
I thank you for your valuable work.
But I have great complain about your uninstaller.
Why your game installer make his uninstaller into C:\WINDOWS with each game's original folder?
My C:\WINDOWS folder was messed up with your uninstallers.
Please make your uninstaller into each game installed location.

They do that so that if the folder gets deleted then the uninstaller is still there to remove registry entries. But you are correct, they should use the documents folder for the uninstaller and not the windows folder. Most games don't do that so they should follow convention.

Sandgamer,

This doesn't mess anything up. Windows doesn't care that those folders are there, as milkweg said, it's just a safe place to keep them to make sure your uninstaller doesn't get accidentally deleted. We originally put it in the installed location and many people had tech support issues because they deleted their folders before running the uninstaller (which they had now deleted) and couldn't clear the game out of their programs list or remove its registry entries.

Regards,

- Erik

Yea, that's great and all but the problem is that your uninstaller doesn't remove them so they stay in the Windows folder if a person doesn't know your installer puts them in that location. Putting files in the Windows folder is just bad practice even if you say it is safe. What if you released a buggy installer that accidentally tried to delete the Windows folder, as has happened before? You guys have an issue with the My Documents folder or something? That's part of the reason the My Documents folder is there for in the first place. Many newer games now put their save files and uninstallers in the My Documents folder so why can't you too?
