MLE and AE - Why?

Post by wwengr »

I am curious if anyone has ever discussed the MLE - Mine Layer Tender onthe forum.

There was no such ship class as far as I can tell. In fact, reading about AE's in Wikipedia, I found a number of entries that talked about ammunition ships carrying reloads of mines.
On 17 October she departed San Francisco for Alaskan waters where she issued a load of mines to smaller ships to be planted as a defense for the base at Adak. - Wikipedia entry on USS Pyro (AE-1)

Is there some playability issue that required the creation of MLE's?

AE's... Well, if I didn't enjoy spending the time to use every little resource, I would never use them. Historically, it appears to be quite correct that underway replenishment of ammunition did not occur until very late in the war.
The highlights of Shasta's wartime career came in 1945. In February, she participated in the first successful underway replenishment of ammunition. Later, while re-supplying the warships supporting the assault on Iwo Jima, she came under the fire of Japanese shore batteries. Her most harrowing experience occurred on 5 June when she was battered by the force fourteen winds of a typhoon off the southeastern coast of Okinawa. Though her cargo had shifted and much of it had been damaged, Shasta still managed a successful rearming rendezvous before sailing for Leyte Gulf in the Philippines.- Wikipedia entry on USS Shast(AE-2)

Yes, we all know that MLE's never existed, and they won't be in the Admiral's Edition. Shouldn't have been in stock either, but that's what it is.

My apologies for asking.

They were created to make mines somewhat more playable... mines got to be a real gamestopper in "Uncommon Valor" (according to some) so several modifications were made... historically, there were mine depots established at various ports (that were not size 9) and MLEs are an attempt to sort of replicate this.

Didn't want to be snippy, but this "issue" has been brought up about a billion times.

Termie... keep in mind that while some of us have been here since the beginning, some others have not. I don't mind seeing the newer members post questions that we have discussed before - especially since the "search" function is basically non-functional...

Besides, it serves to add to the WITP post count, which encourages Matrix to keep supporting our addiction...

Right - some time ago - to introduce some "humor" into the subject - I coined the words "Mine Laying Enabler" to give meaning to the MLE letters. My guess, as to what the WITP desginers were thinking is that they wanted to have some kind of limiting factor on laying minefields - and for whatever reason decided to use a ship type to perform this limitation and they called the ship type MLE. It could have been done in other ways, and you will see it done with "ammunition points" ... a.k.a. numbers of mines of each type in AE. But both ideas are trying to accomplish the same goal - to place some limitations on the laying of mine fields.
In AE the "AE" ship type will also have a much more important role. Among other abilities it will replenish the torpedo complement of your carriers. So a key pre-requisite to operating a group of carriers in an area will be to have an "AE" in a port nearby. For those who currently (in stock WITP) use their "AEs" as "just another AK" be ready to change to plans in AE - as your "AEs" now have more important things to do!
