Depots

Post by robot »

can anyone tell me the best way to destroy depots. I know I need infantry or calvary. But when i tried to get rid of a depot all they took out was one supply each turn. This means it would take over a year to get rid of a depot. Need to be able to take out a whole depot in a turn. Can anyone tell me how you do this please.

Are you talking about supplies? They must be destroyed one point at a time. Depots are groups of 20 supplies that are reserved for depot use, but disbanding a depot does not destroy the supplies, it just frees them to move where needed. If you want to get rid of supplies in an area, one way is to build a fort, which will likely consume the supplies in the area where the fort is being built.

I could be wrong but I believe he was asking how to get rid of a depot in an enemy location.

You don't really get rid of the depot per se, while it has some assets warehousing complexes and such, its mostly an entity that is a conscious decision by command to concentrate logistics in an area.  A depot holds 20 supplies, if a location with a depot has 20 supplies in it, then the depot will provide the depot bonus to initiative for all commanders present with the depot.

So if you can reduce the amount of supply in a location below 20, then while the depot is still there, its not doing anything.  The best way (and only consistent way) is to cavalry raid.  You need to use a large group of cavalry with your best available cavalry leader.  Usually its the Confederacy doing the raiding, so your talking Jeb Stuart, Nathan Forest, Earl Van Dorn have enough command to get a decent sized raiding force with enough skill to do some supply damage.  There are other leaders but they usually have to get more CR to lead enough cav to effectively raid, and they usually for me end up either scouting or sub commanders for those three anyway.

So the short answer is to take as much Cavalry as you can spare and the best Cav leader you can get and raid the territory incessantly!

No I am talking about supply depots behind my line and of no more use to me. To sit there and knock off one supply at a time makes no sense to me. How do you get rid of the whole supply depot at once is what I need to find out. Someone made a statement in the forum here the best thing to do was get rid of supply depots behind your lines. But I have not been able to find the way how to do this. This is what I need for some one to give me this information so I can get rid of at least four depots not the supplies.

Does this make sense the depot not the supplies ok. Don't want to have to spend 20 turns getting rid of supplies when I need them but I don't need the depot understand. Not in enemy ground but behind my lines.

Robot,

Ahhh sorry I misunderstood.  I don't remember exactly offhand how to do it, but there is a way to disband a supply depot.  It is usefull to release the supply to the general pool.  Otherwise say a depot in paducah will hog up 20 supply for nearly the entire war and not be all that useful (unless the rebs hold Humbolt all game.. which.. Mmmm means you have likely lost).

Also note, supplies will stay in the area until needed later. So even if you disband the depot the supplies will stay stockpiled there until they are used by units there, or they are moved via the automated system somewhere else that needs supply. Disbanding the depot will just prevent the computer from 'topping off' this location to 20 supply each turn over and above what it spends otherwise.

There is really no need to worry about supply stockpiled behind the lines, it will stay there until needed but it won't be wasted.

When you click in the region there is a button on the right side of the screen to disband the supply depot located there. I believe this is mentioned several times in the manual.
