Another new player...
Hi all,
First of all my compliments for your job, I'm very impressed!
I'm really interested in seeing how proceed this development because this game looks great (I have heard very positives feedback).
I never played WiF and I think that each grognard must play it!
Having said that, I'd like to know how many time is necessary before to learn (or better understand) this game. I mean, I play Advanced Squad Leader and it is not "only" a game, it requires a lot of time to study the rulebook, to play the scenarios, to prepare a campaign game, and so on...
Is the WiF rulebook(s) more diffcult compared to ASL or to OCS system?
How long does a full game last?
How many Wif kits are included in the pc game?
Thanks in advance [:)]

You will love this game. I don't think I ever touched Advanced Squad Leader again after I started playing WIF -- this from a person who owns every componet of ASL produced by Avalon Hill. Is the rulebook more diffulcult compared to ASL? It certainly isn't as long! [:D]
RE: Another new player...
I have played Squad Leader, ASl and 100's of other wargames. I have done big, small, and monster games. I mostly enjoyed Europa for WWII until WiF came out. To me it is the definitive wargame for WWII grand strategy. You can read and reread the rulebook and always come away with new ideas for strategy. The rules are as enjoyable as the game itself. You can download the WiF rules at ADG's website for free to get a good feel for the game. The RAC (Rules as Coded) document will differ a little as there are small differences due to its being a computer wargame. Still the vast majority of it willget you started in the right direction. MWiF (Matrix World in Flames) will also have a players manual to assist new players in understanding the strategy and mechanics of the game. Welcome to the neighborhood.
Integrity is what you do when nobody is watching.

Try reading through the tutorials posted in this forum. There is s thread pointing to them all at the top of the forum. What you will find in the tutorial threads is the tutorials as they were developed - you might want to skim over the earlier pages until you get towards the end of each thread. There you should find a more or less current version of the tutorial.
I am always interested in feedback from newcomers, especially on the tutorials, because new people bring new eyes and a new perspective on the game.

ASL is the definitive tactical-level wargame (WWII), therefore I found what I'm looking for...

With pleasure [:)], is better if I read the ten tutorials before the WiF rules?

I think the tutorials might be a better place to start since you don't really get to see the map, units, and associated tables with the just rules booklet. The tutorials have almost one screen shot per page, so you'll get to see what things look like. Of course the rules booklet goes into more technical detail.

I take a look at the first tutorial and given that my weekly FtF game has been postponed can I commit these hours to read it [:)]

Hello, and welcome to the WiF community
I bought my copy of the board game 5 years ago, and since that time I've since shorn myself of almost all my other hobbies. I even quit fantasy baseball which was my previous passion. This is an awesome game that you will enjoy for the next 20 years. I've played WiF by e-mail (PBEM) with a couple of Italians, so if you are interested in their contact information I would be happy to send it your way if you send me a personal e-mail.
Cheers
John

You are not the first player that said me "I play only WiF", this is a very posititive feedback.
I'm a little afraid, these games are danger for real life.
Yes, Turin is not so far...but with you, I may have some problems...[:'(]

To me WiF's superior feature is not only it's detail of global ww2 strategy, but the dynamics and interaction that develop in the 4-6 player environment. In this day of 1-on-1 pbem or god forbid solitaire games one can easily enter a social cocoon. You can be a great player in WiF, but for absolute realism the game requires an ability to act as an ally in concert with other entities to win, This social interaction I feel is more rewarding. But then again, that's just me. I recognize there are people who would rather play alone. Even the personality that would spend months building a model ship in a bottle would then place it on display. The accomplishments/failures of the WiF player will rest safely in the memories of those with whom they play. I think this builds friendship, not a bad thing.

Hi Macgregor,
absolutely you are right, thanks to wargames I have known a lot of nice people but my big concern is my girl friend [:'(]
Seriously, this game is a huge investment of time, it looks great, therefore I hope to play it asap.

Hi Blind Sniper
Ahh! The girlfriend! She should fear WiF like Penelope Cruz and just as easily let you spend a night with either, for WiF is one seductive mistress. I once had an Irish girlfriend that offered an example of Irish dance with the stipulation it would be done on the WiF table. If only we chose our women with the same careful thought with which we choose our pastimes.

Last week I finished to read all tutorials and at the moment I'm reading the WiF manual and I found them very helpful to understand/figure how the rules work.
Great work!

There were many people who helped, though I did the writing and Patrice took all the screen shots.[&o]
You can help too - just let me know if you had trouble understanding something. A lot of the strength of the tutorials came about because people identified weaknesses so we could improve them.

RE: Another new player...
I would like to chime in as another newish player that is expectantly looking forward to this game. I played most of the AH strategy titles I loved 3R and A3R for games with somewhat the same flavour of WiF.
In my Sophomore year of College a friend was playing the Axis in a game of WiF at another friends house. He wanted me to take over Germany so he could concentrate on Japan and Italy there was only one allied player (the guy whose house hosted the event and whose wife graciously allowed us to keep the board setup in her formal dining room for egads a year or more... if she had a sister I woulda married her.
Anyway I came into the game sometime in early 1940 Poland was still lingering and the German assault on the low countries was failing because while a decent amount of TAC was available the previous German player had built few fighters (or had lost alot) to support them. He had also begun a rather ambitious Naval building program (to support his initiative in the med.. odd since he had chosed the east as the german victory objective). I had alot of fun rescuing the German's overrunning Spain and seizing Gibralter and then launching an invasion of Iceland (with italian NAV there eventually if I remember) and an ill-conceived sealion that the CW player commented on thusly "That's not an invasion, that's a rather large prisoner of war camp" after I was unable to support the landings! I even was able to launch barbarossa mostly on time.
Anyway we never got much past 1942 I went home for the summer and when I got back my schedule wasn't conducive to playing. But I had LOVED A3R and this was everything I wanted A3R to be and more. I never got to play again, but I have always wanted to do so. I await this release with barely controlled delight!

To be more precise I have a ton of questions [:)] (impulses, combat, supply, production and so on), all tutorials are a very good introductory overview but of course they are not enough to explain the game. I'm waiting for scenario tutorials.

Just to chime in here about tutorials also.
The Video Tutorials for GG's "War Between the States" accelerated the learning curb for me immensly in that game. I think they would do the same for MWiF also, there will be enough time spent learning the subtlies of the game itself, then you have to learn how to be good at the thing! Helping as much as possible with the "This is how you do things.. and this is what they do" will be a huge asset I think!
