Adding Maintenance Carriers

Post by RedLancer »

I'm looking to add HMS Pioneer and HMS Perseus to the game. They were maintenance carriers of the Colossus class. As they could only take aircraft aboard by crane putting them in as CVLs isn't right. What would be the best ship type to replicate their repair and ferry function?

Thanks

No ship type properly models their function.

I thought as much - but being much more of an expert than me which would you choose as a compromise?

You might create a class approximately identical in data to the Colossus but rate it as a CVE. You could further change the number on device line 20 to zero. That is - no combat sortees will ever fly from the ship - but the aircraft transport and maintenance role will exist.

The Unicorn served as a CVL at need. The other two lacked catapults but served adequately as aircraft ferries and mobile maintenance bases. I'd suggest treating all three as replenishment carriers.

In RHS you get only Unicorn - sans air group. But there are carrier capable and carrier qualified units that can transfer aboard for temporary operations. She is rated as a CVL and most players probably use her for transit purposes - but she would work fine for maintenance or as a CVL. And really did.

I would have treated Pioneer and Perseus like Unicorn but as I hope you can see from my picture there was a large structure towards the end of the ship. Unlike Unicorn they could n't land aircraft like a conventional carrier. Hence my question. Would including them as CVLs with a 0 device rating allow them to have aircraft put aboard for ferrying only? What restrictions on transfer would that put on them?

The only difference between them and an AK in game terms is that they could deliver operational aircraft.

I'll do that then - they'll be delivering these aircraft:

1. Supermarine Seafang
2. Hawker Sea Havock (What If based on the Hawker P1030)
3. Fairey Fireguard (What If early version of Fairey Firefly AS.7)
4. Bristol Beaumaris (What If cross between a Beaufighter and a Short Sturgeon)
5. Hawker Sea Fury
6. Westland Wyvern
7. Blackburn Firebrand

Carriers have a device called "Aircraft Ordnance" which MUST BE in device slot 20 for both the ship and the class. You could use the Unicorn class slot and just detete the device for these two ships. Or you could create an entirely new class called Pioneer with nothing in slot 20. The device number is 195. If you simply do this - your ship won't be able to arm carrier sortees - but it will in all other ways be a carrier.

You can put inside an LCU you can call it Colossus with only aviation support. When Colossus arrive at a base you land it and improve the aircraft repairs. The el-cid idea is good too put 0 missions ability in your carrier.
