My First campaign questions

Post by Misconduct »

I played through a few smaller scenarios and so far did quite well, I am on my first Large campaign 43-46 as allies. I figure this gives me an easier (being allies) chance to learn how game mechanics works. So far on my first turn I did decent, main problem was not enough CAP over my fields. Main question I want to ask is about the convoy system, basically I see plenty of AK and AP's out there and is it best idea to supply a few bases as jump points rather then alot of bases? For example I have most of australia targeting Port Moresby and I am beefing up Darwin for an australian jump point to Java area. Same for India, British army to Rangoon soon as possible.

Am I correct on supplying small bases like Port Moresby, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal etc rather then resupply alot of bases?
Some like Port Moresby and Gigi island I have convoys headed to with fuel/supply however others like Johnson atoll I have nothing.

Also 2nd question I had was about shipping aircraft, I assume if you don't use transports you can simply shift them around via airfields?

Supply - tip of the sword is best, but secondary bases should also be supplied, just make sure none of your troops attrit from lack of. Also Don;t let the computer control anything.

Aircraft - of course, as long as you are in range you move a/c around by moving them from Base to base - only distances too far do I load a/c onto ships. Be careful with the weather for transfers and that the range is not at the end of their extended range otherwise you will get loads of OP losses.

From the other thread you posted:
Pretty great option really with the size of the campaigns attempting to do one in a real time enviroment would entirely suck, however I think the option of connecting via IP for a live game should be allowed for someone that plays say a Scenario.

I think that Carrier Force / Strike which will be an add-on for UV and also from my reading a complete game in itself MIGHT employ IP (but the info is very sketchy & the game is a long long way off) - see the UV thread for more.

Keep in mind that if you pour too much supply in a small base, a lot of it will spoil.  If port + airfield size is not at least 10, and you unload too much supply/fuel, a portion of it will disappear.  And "too much" depends on the actual size.  IIRC, the exact formula is (port+airfield size)²+1000 for supplies, and 3*(port+airfield)²+5000 for fuel.  So, a "dot" base, with standard size 0 and thus maximum size 3/3 for port and airfield, will suffer spoilage if you dump more than 37.000 supplies or 113.000 fuel.

campaign questions? Well, I suppose better thatn campaign promises! [:D](JUST KIDDING ,NOT POLITICAL! NOT POLITICAL!)[:D]. Seriously , I'd recommend NOT using AP's to slep cargo. They are not very efficient, and should be reserved for troops, especially troops used in an invasion. I use the large AK's for long haul transport, and small AK's for small base , inter island supply and logistics. If you notice a high speed small AK (17 or 18 knots) , you might want to reserve it for invasions , or for special high priority shipping (like hauling aircraft squadrons long distance). Treasure such ships, you won't get many.

Good luck on your campaign.[:)]

It is best to choose a few large bases as your forward depots. Be careful in choosing these bases in that you do not want to stock up on supply at bases that are going to be captured by your opponent. He has ways of finding uses for your avgas and ammo!

Anyway, I use several of the larger ports as supply depots and then shuttle supplies to the smaller bases with my smaller AKs (or barges). When you send a large AK (say, a 4000 or 5000 capacity AK) to a small port it takes a lot longer to unload than a smaller ship, thus placing it in danger of enemy attack for a longer time. So, the smaller the port, the smaller the supply ship. The big AKs are used to shuttle supplies from the west coast to your forward depots (not front line bases).

The big APs are simliarly used to ferry troops to the forward depots. The smaller APs are used to take those troops to the exposed front line bases.
fair winds,

Ah I had to reset my campaign, as I started the 43-46 campaign I goofed in a few areas, for one I sent the british invasion fleet straight to rangoon to capture it, which I got in a week however I didn't restock the chinese airforce with my left over hurricanes and they were pretty much wiped out.

Secondly my attack on guam right off bat was utter disaster. I didn't have enough reinforcements or supplies. Also Southland which I took was re-taken by a japanese deliberate attack which I lost over 100 corsairs which were Sweeping Rabaul.

I guess what I should of done was take Rabaul out of the picture and then focus on Guam next instead of having 2 seperate invasion fleets, limit to one
and work from there.

When looking for forward bases for supply, make sure the Airbase and Port sizes add up to 10....no spoilage.  Do a couple of small invasions to get experience in what you will need and what to expect.  Also, remember that pounding the enemy for three months is the best force mulitplier in the game.  Knock his supplies to zero and keep him from resupplying and the invasion will succeed.
