Help! How the befudge do you save a game?

I may be blind as a journalist and stupid as a politician but I have been through the manual numerous times, word searched it ect and can't find this basic info. Couldn't find Pause either but discovered it (F3) by experimenting. I am very new to this type of game so this may be something so obvious everyone knows it. Since I am so new to this I will not get through a game at one time and need to save. Thanks.

You cannot save a game mid-battle.

You'll get thru it fine. Time flys by in this game. Sometimes a day changes before you can break away from it!

correct, but I believe you can also save a game yourself after each battle (in adddition to auto-save mentioned) that can give you the ability to go back to the game to that point at any time. Autosave will keep using the same file name, so you can only go back one battle. By saving under a different name for example after the first full day, you could go back to that point after say the 3rd or 4th day without having to play the first days battles all over again.
