corps evaporates after siege

Post by ndrose »

Never seen this one before. I won a combat and besieged the city. Didn't get in but the garrison starved on the opponent's land phase. Then the game tried to move my forces into the city. (Does anyone know why it does this? It often happens.)

What was unique about this case was that there wasn't room in the city, so the game moved in the corps counter, but emptied it (completely, and the troops didn't go elsewhere as far as I can tell), and sent the attached leader back to the pool. There was a pop-up saying "city cannot support corps" or something like that.

Even if your corps didn't disappear, this still needs to be fixed. The game shouldn't be trying to force anything into the city. Why does it do this? Only ME/Matrix know, either way it's broken and needs to be fixed.

Seems like there are more bugs now then there were with 1.03, is that right?

I don't know why it does this. There are times when one might want to be in the city--if the garrison starves, that country's land phase must be over, so you couldn't get attacked by them, but they might have allies who have yet to move, and you might prefer to be in the city. But there are also many times when you wouldn't want to be. It should be the player's option.

I can see that in pbem it might be difficult to let the player make this decision on the opponent's land phase, though. I think the best thing would be to leave the corps outside the city and then give the defender the option to retire into the city in lieu of a chit choice if he's attacked. (This is supposed to be possible per EiA anyhow, isn't it?)

But in any case I've never before seen the loss of factors resulting from entry into the city. I think that's a new bug. (Or else it only occurs in special circumstances that just happen to obtain here.)

I don't know whether there are more bugs now. New ones do seem to pop up, but I think the sum of the vectors is still in the right direction.

I *think* (but would need ME/Matrix to confirm this) that the game moves a corps into the city to establish control. In the boardgame, control of a city/area was gained just by being there/winning the siege. But in the PC game, just being in the area does not establish control of the city in the area, even if there are no enemy forces occupying the city. You see this in the form of an enemy fleet remaining in the port city until you select one of your corps and detach a garrison or enter the city using the enter city button.

There definitely seems to be an outstanding issue with the game incorrectly allowing garrisons to be overstacked when corps are in the garrison. I reported what may be a related bug (Mantis 474).

It seems that at some points during the turn it is possible to overstack garrisons by using corps but at the end of the phase this causes something else in the game to blow up and troops to move around/disappear.
