CAN' PLAY THIS GAME!

Post by mantrain »

1. anytime I start a game, my opponents drop out after a few moves and fail to see it through!
2. The AI sits on the duff and lacks aggression. As the CP, Russia does not attack, for example.

How can anyone be enjoying this game under these circumstances?????????????

mantrain, if you have the v1.32 beta, you'll need to go to the members' area and get the 1.3x AI hotfix patch.

That's my pet peeve about all PBeM games. Can't really blame the game.
I like the solitaire version and haven't had an overabundance of Russian stagnation.

I haven't upgraded to the 1.3 series of patches but, in my games, I felt the Russian AI was TOO aggressive - continually throwing away troops in futile attack after futile attack. Once they played themselves out, they were easy pickings.

Suggest you all get the newest patches loaded- 1.34 and all the ones in between- lots of bugs got fixed- map changes- some new units- changes in production locations- and the AI is put into a better stance.
The Americans were modifired to bring them more into alignment with history- IE the effect of the Americans- the first ones in were more effective then the later ones- but some portion of the Americans was always effective.

I won't go into the effect of Americans reliance on marksmanship too deeply- though the Germans' themselves made note of it regularily. The German units that fought the Americans during our offensives were shredded with massed aimed rifle fire as much as machine guns and arty- the Americans were deadly marksmen compared to the French or the Brits( the later Brits)- the 1914 Brits were very expert marksmen also- and could do rapid fire aimed very well. That was lost in the later end war mass Brit armies- (the Pals forces and the conscripts of 17 and 18.)
In attack mode Americans shot at everything.  They practiced squad drill to all fire on marked targets picked by their NCOs- and the 1903 Springfirld- (and its 1917 Enfield brother used by many US units)- were probably the most accurate mankillers the US Army ever issued. They were used in WW2 and Korea and while I was in an Infantry Company in Vietnam in 1969 I saw a special and prized Springfield Sniper rifle- totally customized by then- wonderful Sniper rifles. Deadly in the hands of our troops on the western front in 17 and 18.
In any case the patches really do raise this game to another level- try them and see.

I don't know what you guys are talking about!  The only patch for this game in the members area is dated may 2008! I have V 1.31 and for the life of me I cannot locate the newest version/patch/ AI fix

Mantrain,

You're looking at the wrong location in the (confusing) members area.

The beta files are not under "patches/updates", but under "registered downloads" (if you have registered GoA!).
There you should see a list of games you've registered, with a "download" hyperlink next to each.
Click on the one next to GoA and that brings you to the right page, showing these files as the most recent:

"Download Guns of August AI fix
Version v.1.3x (9 JAN 2009)
ZIP Download GunsOfAugust-AIHotfix.zip (2.67 mb)
Description This fixes the AI file that for some reason becomes corrupted and causes the AI to play extremely lethargically i.e. not attack. This only works on 1.3x versions of the game.

Download Guns of August 1.32 Public Beta
Version v.1.32 (15 DEC 2008)
ZIP Download GunsOfAugust-UpdateComp-v132Beta.zip (64 mb)
Description NOTE: This is a BETA update, provided for those customers who are interested in helping test it before official release. This update is not officially supported.
"

I'm guessing that 1.32 is the most recent February beta patch.

Opps yes 1.32 is the most recent patch and you have to get registered to use it- that is a simple process- once your serial number is registered you can get into these new beta patches.
