AAR at the 1BC Civilization Site

Post by Anthropoid »

I've been a long-time player of the Civilization games by Sid Meiers and I got into Matrix games through a link over at a Civ message board I'm a long time member of. I played the Avalon Hill type games in High School, so I'm an old-time board gamer (and RPG gamer . . .) too. But over the last five years, most of my gaming has been Civ.

I've frankly grown tired of Civ because of the lack of realism, and more and more lean toward Matrix style of games (WiTP, WPO, TOAWIII, WWI. COGEE is a great game, and so with the intent of promoting more Civvers gaining an interest in COGEE and other Matrix games, I've started a sort of AAR over at a site called One Big Community or 1BC for short.

I have a bad track record of finishing AARs, but as you can see I've already got a lot of information packed into this one. The main intent being to provide a kind of overview of the game.

Since I've now covered most aspects of the game as far as I understand it so far, I'll probably slack back on the frequency of posts in that thread, but it would be nice to at least keep up on a half-year basis or something.

Thanks! That's just an amazing AAR. If I didn't know better I'd think you were my sockpuppet. ("An evil sockpuppet?" "You always do that!")

I must say, it's been a surprise to us at WCS how little word of COG and FOF has filtered into the Civ community. We designed both games for the wargaming crowd, of course, but both have numerous major features that we expected would appeal to people who like Civ. Unfortunately, 99% of them probably have no idea that these games exist, so it's great to see something like this.

"I'm not your sockpuppet" [Gil said to himself, portraying the "Mad Scientist" "Anthropoid"]

"Yes you are!" he responded back.

"Not!" "Am" "Zippit!" . . .

That was a lot of stuff I put up, but trust me, you won't be seeing that kinda feverish activity for a prolonged period. I might post again in that AAR in a week or so . . . Spring Break just started, so I managed to take half a day off yesterday, and stayed up a bit late. Today it's off to Kaintuck for some Spelunk!

ADDIT: BTW, I also created a link one post thread with a link to the 1BC thread at Civfanatics.

Tell me if you see a surge in sales . . . [;)]

I think _some_ Civvers will take to a game like COG, but nothing like 50% I'd guess. I think the Civ series has progressively degraded toward the more cartoonish, fantasy position in the spectrum. Maybe in a year or two when there are much faster machines, Civ4 BTS can be modded so that REALLY enormous maps (1 tile = 25 miles e.g.,) can be run, and at that point, the moddability of it might just lure me back to it. You could basically accomplish anything with it, it is just that the graphics load is so high, you cannot actually play large maps that actually accurately simulatate whole Earth cultural histories.

So...now it's time for you to design a game for the Civgaming crowd! [&o]
Imagine, Civ but with the cool tactical battles and in-depth diplomacy of CoGEE.

That would actually make me pick up CivIV again, too...

Hmm, not sure what happened with that link. It did originally link directly to the thread but it seems to have been redirected to the main home page.

Here is the url

Hmmm, could try it and see if it is not too hard and maybe over a few days get it ported over . . .

-=-=-=-=-PORT INITIATED-=-=-=-

Tones thread about Empire: Total Frustration, has really got me going about Matrix Games. If you want to read more, check out my posts in that thread.

My intent with this thread is to provide a kind of AAR / introduction / review of Matrix and one of their most esteemed affiliates WCS games.

So its a Sunday, the wife is away on business travel, I went hiking yesterday, and I've got a pretty hectic week coming up before I get a week holiday caving in Kentucky . . . In short, a GREAT DAY to buy a Matrix Game!

The time as I type this is 9:51. At 8:38 I decided to purchase Crown of Glory: Emperor's Edition. I did this in large part because I am familiar with the Forge of Freedom game, produced by the same guys (WCS). In this thread I'll just walk you through how my purchase, installation, and initial playing goes.

I have a fast connection (54.0 mBps) and the DL was actually done about 35 minutes ago. The unpacking of the DL took about 10 minutes, and the installation took about 5 minutes. I've been posting a lot the past hour or so.

So from purchase decision to install completed was about: 8:35 AM today till about 9:25 AM or maybe 9:35. Now I'll see if it works.

Yeah, unfortunately this is not going to work because all the images I loaded up on image shack are not preserved as links when I go back into my posts in that thread to edit, they are actual embeded images on the 1BC thread now.

After installing, this is what I got. It puts a short cut on my desktop for me

IMAGE LOST

Here is the situation on my rig right now. I turned off Outlook.exe, but otherwise will give it a first try without turning off anything.

IMAGE LOST

Ah "69" that is an auspicious number of "proceses" :)

The following image has absolutely NOTHING to do with this game or any other necessarily, but I found it, it is amazing, and I just want to share the glory . . . the Rump of Glory!

IMAGE LOST

Now is there REALLY any question why humanity has been for centuries afflicted with the inhumanity, the brutality, the insanity of war?

I think that image right there sums it up quite nicely.
