Game Will NOT Install

Post by New York Jets »

I have tried installing from both my digital download and CD and the installer stops operating at the end and freezes.

Any hints?

At which screen exactly does it stop? Have you turned off anti-virus/security programs before installing?

It stops in the "Empires in Arms Setup" screen. There is a message in parentheses that says (Not Responding). The little blue bar at the top is 100% of the way over. The message says Please Wait...

The window also says

Installing Files...

C:\Matrix Games\Empires in Arms\WindowsHelp\Widows6.0-KB917607-x86msu

This seems to be the file that's hanging it up.

This is all after I turned off my anti virus.

I tried going into my regedit to clean anything out because I used to have to do that with some of my other games that used to hang up on install but, I cannot find anything for Empires in Arms.

Hopefully this information will help you figure out what I need to do. Thank you for your time on this.

If you've been having this problem with other game installations then I think it points the finger at their being an issue with your installation of Windows rather than a problem with the EiA installation itself.

I have had no problems installing other games. In fact, EiA had been installed on this computer before. That's what's frustrating about this.

Not to pick on DC, but this seems to be alot of 3rd party vendors' solution: blame Windows when we can't find the problem with OUR software.

It sounds like you are missing something in the regedit. Rather than doing it manually, try using a 3rd party tool like CCleaner or something.

Thank you very much. I just bought a copy of RegCure from CCLeaner and everything installed nicely.

NOw let's see if World War One will run decently now.

I wasn't aware of RegCure and I didnt' know CCleaner produced that software. I was refering to CCleaner.exe (it's freeware, or at least was last time I checked) BUT however you got it to go that's great! Hopefully, this will allow you to keep your registry clean.

Unless you truly understand the registry system it's difficult to find and pinpoint exactly what is in there. I don't (and wouldn't want to do it manually even if I could) so I use a program.

I usually run the Registry Cleaner right after I uninstall a large program or if I am going to reinstall something.

Glad it worked for you... maybe we will see you in a PBEM game sometime.

Messed up Windows installations are often the cause of failures like this, although I agree with you in part, some vendors too easily fall to blaming the computer rather than the product.

However in this case I'd stand by my analysis because, firstly, whatever else there is wrong with it, the EiANW install process has been pretty solid, secondly because in his second post I thought he said he'd had problems installing other games, implying that his PC had an issue rather than a whole load of games being faulty. However in his third post he said he hadn't had problems installing other games, so that confused me.

Well, since he hasn't had problems with other applications it seems that something might be off with the EiANW uninstaller. Now, maybe Marshall used some 3rd party API (probably from MS) in the uninstaller or maybe just by building the .exe he check some "add uninstaller" box in VS or something, I don't know, I don't code/build commercial apps, so it's possible that it is a MS problem after all.

I know I'm necro-ing, but I'm gonna post the issue resolution here in case anyone else experiences it. This is the first post in the forums that comes up on a search with the error text, so I figure it's a likely landing spot for future seekers. It would be nice if it could be put into the Troubleshooting FAQ, but the admins seem a bit defensive about where the fault lies.

The issue is that the install is trying to build on WinHelp which is no longer included in Windows starting with Vista. To resolve the issue, you need to install the WinHelp fix so that the EiA install sees it's there.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607

This may have been resolved with later patches, but if you're working from the original "1.00" cd like me, then you'll have this issue.

Again, it would be great if this could be put into the FAQ.

Also, the "new troubleshooting installer" sticky is long outdated and just adds to the frustration. The file referenced is no longer there.

I'm now off to follow the ridiculously convoluted upgrade path (apparently including interim patch files that are not even available on the publisher's site....) [8|]
