CTD from Atlantic Naval Interceptions?

Post by Anthropoid »

I'm getting a CTD from naval interceptions in the Atlantic

Image

while playing my March 1793 turn of my latest game as France.

Will provide the .sve in next post from just a couple steps before this, as well as my Dxdiag if needed. The .sve is just before I hit End Turn, and then there are a series of naval encounters with the American Fleets (who just DOWd me because I'm blockading Gibraltor and Portugal). For each encounter I hit Intercept, and Near or Middle Start, and the Americans flee. There were two or maybe three encounters and this one pops up, and immediately after I say yes to this interception, I get this CTD.

This is not the first time this has happened to me. The previous time in about Nov 1792 of this game it was CTDing becaues of an interception encounter with the Portugese fleet in Atlantic. But the previous time it was happening during a turn when there were a lot more battles and encounters, so it was more problematic to provide the .sve. Somehow I managed to avoid the CTD happening by choosing different interception choices and managed to get the turn to play out.

Apart from the CTD, which may be my machine? this brings up for me a separate issue that would be neat to change if it is doable: make the game do an auto-save after each encounter/battle so that when you have a string of battles and encounters and have a glitch you do not have to go back and replay all of them.

Let me know if you want Dxdiag stuff. Save file is attached to next post.

I've attached the .sve file and .rep file to this post. I also wanted to retrace the actions I made (interception or not, near start/mid start, etc.) to make sure I get the same result again.

The .sve I'll provide is just before I hit End Turn for May 1793. After Ending Turn, AI moves and thinks, then I get a popup for:

Does Cornic's want to intercept the American Fleet? I say Yes, Intercept. I see Cornic's move up from its position to the Atlantic box off Portugal (BTW, could these Atlantic boxes be given unique names?).

I see the combat window: 6 U.S. ships versus 71 French. I choose Detailed Combat, and Near Start. The U.S. immediately flees and the Pursuit result is Massacre, French win.

Next I get a battle report in the Atlantic box off Gibraltor. 6 US ships versus 1 French (privateer). I choose Detailed Combat, Middle start. U.S. flees, pursuit result is Orderly Retreat.

Next I get a battle report back in the Atlantic box off of Portugal again. This battle will have 8 US versus 7 French ships. I choose Detailed Combat and Far Start.

Then I get the CTD with the image above.

ADDIT: I played it through a third time exactly as I describe here, and it worked out exactly the same CTD. So, you should be able to consistently replicate it, unless it is a problem with my machine.

ADDIT*2: I turned the Interception command off on Cornic's Fleet, and tried to replay it. The result is that there is a battle with one of the French fleets that is blockading Portugal. I choose Detailed, Near Start (it was about 6 US vs 29 French), and U.S. flees, again a rout.

Then there is a second battle in the same Atlantic box, and again the same CTD. Maybe the problem is that the U.S. fleet cannot get off the map?

I replayed it again to try to keep my game going. This time I moved Treville's Fleet away from Lisbon where it was blockading. Again I get the battle b/w the French 3rd Fleet blockacing Minho. I choose Detailed, near, and U.S. flees. Next I get another combat with U.S. in the same Atlantic box. This time 2 U.S. and 2 French (must be either the privateers or merchants I am moving around the Med. I figured it would crash again if I chose detailed, so this time I just chose Instant combat and I progressed on to the start of the June 1793 turn. Phew!

That is more or less how I got past this same CTD happening in more or less the same ocean box (might have been the one just to the north of the Atlantic coast of Portugal) before a few turns back. It seems to be particular to repeated encounters/battles happening in those Atlantic boxes.

Had it happen again a few turns later. American Fleet again bouncing from a battle in one box to a battle in the next in Atlantic, and again when I chose detailed battle during the second battle with the Americans in an adjacent box.

Thanks for the detailed reports and save file.  I have fixed one bug related to this since release, but will check to see whether this fix addresses your problem as well, or whether your report is a separate issue.
