Scenario Maker Map Selection

Post by Prince of Eckmühl »

I've having a problem with SM.

It allows me to change the map for a scenario when I'm in the utility and save the change.

However, the change of map isn't reflected in the scenario list when I actually go to play.

For instance, a scenario was initially constructed with a map called Battleaxe, but I generated a new map called Brevity and want to use it with the scenario.

I make the change and save while in SM, but the edit isn't reflected in the game's scenario list.

The game still shows Battleaxe for the map, rather than Brevity when I go to play.

I've tried uninstalling the game, deleting the CotA directory and reinstalling, but still no joy.

Is there somewhere else in Windows where the info is cached in such a way that the old map reference gets retained?

You should not be experiencing such difficulties.

Does this have anything to do with naming the map in SM? That name will override the file name in the scenario selection.

Also, make sure you rebuild-rename the map cache?

No, the map is always named in MM. In SM, I only select which map that I want to use. For that matter, I didn't even know that it was possible to name/rename a map file in SM. It is true that I'm trying to use a modified map with a different name than that with which the scenario was originally created.

Rather than rebuilding the map cache file, should I delete the cache and rebuild the file again?

BTW, I sent RedMike an updated scenario file this morning and he can't open it in the game anymore. I'm relatively certain that he's got the map files for the scenario that's cited/selected in SM. I can play the game with the same files that I've sent him.

I suspect that the difference is that my CotA installation has the older map files that I originally used to build the scenario in SM (before I updated the map and then renamed it). If that's the case, SM is indicating that one map is in use, and cites it as such, when in fact an older map is what the game is using.

Sorry, I meant to say rename in MM.

I'm not sure what is happening here. While playing the game, the scenario will display the map cache if it exists, otherwise it displays the map itself.
If you edit a map, the map cache will show the old stuff unless you rebuild it. You may already know these things - I'm just grasping at straws. Case-sensitivity? slight misspelling?

There is a way to see what map file the scenario is trying to call. Open the scenario file with notepad. at the very bottom of several pages of jibberish, you will see the the map name and the map file name.

That'll be my first stop when I get home this evening.

Thanks!

Well, I figured out what I've been doing wrong for the last day or so.

I've been working with the same base map for so long, that I forgot that "naming" a map isn't as simple as naming a file.

I also have to name it formally in MM if it's to show up correctly in the scenario list:

I wonder if there's anything that I've managed not to do wrong, thus far?

Okay, I opened the file and found the following in the last line:

=        Battleaxe   Battleaxe3.AAM   CreteEstab.AAE
Battleaxe = what you named it in MM, and what displays on the scenario selection.

Battleaxe3.AAM is the name of the file, and what must be attached in SM (and what the SM and game will look for and will crash if it cant find it)
