Europa in Flammen - Axis Perspective

Post by cpdeyoung »

19390901 : War again for Europe, and for Germany, resurgent and ambitious. Hemmed in by the Allies after WWI we need to break free before the aggressive powers around us crush us a final time.

This game will follow the following special rules :
How about this for the next game:
1) your regular PP transfer rules;
2) override that with your new rule, wherein a major or neutral is not allowed to send PPs to another neutral unless it has 50% favorable diplo with that country;
3) no neutral will be controlled by a player until he has acieved that minimum 50% favorable diplo. (this will cut down on PBEM email transfers!)
4) use your +50% PPs for Germany and the UK.

Point 1 : As we have played it.
Point 2 : Ok.
Point 3 : I will start with Germany, Italy, and Slovakia. All of whom are at war or over 50% Romania nearly there.
You start with France, Great Britain, and Poland.
Point 4 : En garde!

Amendment : The USA and USSR are under control of the Allied player, although both neutral. The AI does not handle the builds well, to say the least.

Comments at the start : I am coming off a defeat in "Sturm und Drang" and I have a bunch of ideas. Gary commented on the extensive campaign in North Africa as one of my strategic errors in SuD. In exculpation I will say that in the back of my mind I intended to assault and conquer Great Britain, but Gary's attack with the Soviets threw that plan off. I did not mind the attack when it came, and was almost relieved, but in retrospect I see that Gary did just the right thing. I think I was too timid in the East in SuD. One tends to see threats that do not exist, and these stopped me from an all out attack on the Soviets. One cannot allow them the upper hand.

I am happier with my play in the West, except for the April 1944 disaster, which I think cost me the game. Gary has some blunders he would take back too, and I will not dwell on mine. I once broke a leg, and when the doctor took a look at the xray after it healed he said "You won't break it there again." I will not lose Le Havre that way again!

This game should be fun for both of us, as we both have lessons we learned from SuD, but we have not solved all problems!

With this production bonus and its derivate firepower, you might try some creative strategies for Axis [:)]  For example, you might consider annexing entire Balkans! I have a feeling, that it might be a better strategy, than making them ally - there is to much hustle with managing those countries, especially its "cannon fodder", also there is much waste in doubled (tripled?!) research effort. With proper air support and paratroopers, it might be a real blitz campaign. With 50% bonus and Balkan PP boost Germany might change into real monster

Also, I would love to see "some action" in Switzerland, but I'm not sure if it is "profitable" endeavor. In other AAR Garry pointed that it is not easy and requires proper planning - but again - paratroopers and air support can do real magic (judging by recent ARRs [;)]).

Good luck, and thanks again for AAR [:)]

You cannot attack a nation that is friendly to you, but I am planning some "interesting" options for my little brothers. This is one of the lessons I learned in SuD and you will see my "answers" as we continue.

The beginning of a campaign is such fun in this game, so many options open ahead of you. The huge tactical-operational hurdle you face as the Axis is the encirclement of your forces. This simply cannot be allowed, and when the game gets to a certain point is is very hard to avoid. Like you I have noticed the new infatuation with airborne troops and this means rear area security must be very much improved. A line means very little when the enemies fly over it. Gary is obviously thinking about naval affairs a lot too, and this was one of the things I wanted to show in SuD. Now that he is looking that way I know it will be much tougher at sea too, and it was no picnic last game. Gary was inexperienced at sea, but he won't make mistakes twice and he can, and I expect, will out build me at sea.

I am very glad you are enjoying the AAR. I am delighted to have the community following the adventures Gary and I find in these games.

Chuck

PS : I will take a look at the Swiss in the "quiet times".

19391201 : The Netherlands capitulates, and joins our New European Order. The panzer gruppe mentioned below is a new over staffed unit, between a division and corps in size. Most are divisional in size now, but ready to be filled out as we produce more AFVs.

19400101 : The attack in the West is so tied in with Italian entry that we want to settle the Yugoslav matter first. This will be a real test for the new inexperienced Panzers and the terrain is not ideal. We need to strengthen these before serious campaigning, but just now having them rail transportable is valuable.

Oh my goodness - do the French have no line in front of your infantry pushing through south Belgium? It looks like you are nearly unopposed. Yikes France seems to be in trouble.

Gary must have forgot and given the French Army a furlough in Paris. I am sure they will be back for the war soon.

Or perhaps they are sunning themselves on the Rivera, lovely down there!

A very interesting strategy. I think it may pay off. Are you suspecting you will face hordes of low level infantry divisions when you fisrt go into Russia?

James,

I suspect Gary will do the unexpected at every opportunity. We are replaying "Sturm und Drang", but the Germans and British are a good bit stronger. His choice for the French deployiment option was "Attack immediately", and now as JJ points out his French are not near the Belgian border. The fall of Brussels wil not be as important if my panzers are not around, or if his French are much deeper in France.

This should be a fascinating game. JJ is showing what can be done with the powerful Germans in the Soviet Union. He has me rocked back, and has huge gains in land, and an impressive ratio in killed units. Gary will be using his lessons learned in naval affairs, and I have that war to fight also. Each of us has a recent experience to draw upon. Even if I take Yugoslavia soon, I have France, Spain, the North African choices, etc. I expect Malta will be guarded like the Crown Jewels, and so much more.

I think Gary may use some massed, weak units, but he has seen my "HalfAgain" and how poorly that worked for me, so he may go a different route. I will be excited to see how this one plays out.

Divisions do give you good movement and can pack a pretty good punch so I think building a bunch of them isn't a bad idea [:)]

19400401 : The situation in France is very weird, with the Germans carefully avoiding Brussels and Lille. Some unit have headed for Greece, but that can be a tough nut, and we do not want to fight the British there just now.
