upwards firing weapons on fighters

just a quick question about fighters with upwards firing weapons. do they work offensively? against just bombers? against anything? or just defensively?

In reality, they only served to take out bombers from a relatively safe direction.

has anybody tested the efficacy of upwards firing weapons in the game engine. I know el cid has set the black widow top turret as a forward firing weapon to simulate its actual use. should the ki45 NF retain its upwards 20mm or should it be changed to forward firing?
